Best DL Plan Now

I think we do not sign Jared Allen, as he is a progress-blocker for Selvie (who I think should be moved to weakside DE) or a draft pick like Ealy or Dee Ford. I think we should re-sign Anthony Spencer to a prove-it 1-year deal to play strongside DE in a rotation with Mincey. Then we'll have a very solid DL rotation with Selvie, Mincey, Spencer, and rookie at DE; and Melton, Bass, Crawford at 3-Tech, with Hayden and McClain at 1-Tech.

I'm up for this, it's probably much cheaper too, but at the off chance we get Allen at a reasonable price, I take him over Spencer, definitely.

Sign
SDE Will Smith
DT-1T Kevin Williams
Draft
DT-3T Aaron Donald
WDE Trent Murphy

Even if spencer comes FREE id pass. His best days are behind him. He'll need to sit out for a year like Lattimore to be 100%. Bring him to camp next year.

George Selvie is no spring pup. You don't worry about stopping his progress because he has hit his ceiling already.

I'm not against resigning Spencer but I am against counting on him to be a integral part of this defense.

correct....don't know the fascination with Spence...it's strange

i think with the signing of Melton, Crawford stays at DE coming inside too replace someone in the inside on pass rushing downs, we might sign someone like, Phillips Ayers or maybe someone else out there, remember last year Phillips signed the deal later during free agency after the draft so just cause we don't sign anybody til draft or after you can't count nothing out, he managed too have 13 sacks in the Broncos 4-3 doesn't have too start but can be used as our 3rd. down pass rusher too keep fresh, but we also draft DE Ford, Ealy or maybe pull out a trade and some how draft Clowney which i truly doubt but when jerry pulled that trade for Claiborne people wouldn't think we would either so just putting it out there, although I would go Ealy at 16 or a trade down maybe even the hot name right now from Boise, Demarcus Lawrence too replace Demarcus ware or Scott Crichton , maybe even a safety the 2 the qualify for a first round pick ofcourse

If you don't want too read, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN LOL!

Thanks, I needed a good laugh. Now, to figure out a way to insert this into a new signature......................

you guys are hilarious i wont be suprised if Melton goes completely AWOL by training camp. This guy is a FREAK.

We need a weak side DE but I don't want to pay too much for Allen. Selvie has been a great find but let's be realistic. I'm sure he's excellent depth and an "all else fails" starter at WDE but I'm not gonna go putting him as my avatar or anything.

david buehler could have been the answer at defensive end... but we let him get away.

:(

Calling Allen a progress stopper for Selvie is clearly laughable, however the OP's plan is pretty agreeable. If we can do something cheap and non-commital with Spencer, we protect ourselves and give ourselves enough options to go into May's draft without desperation.

Then we still hopefully bring in a top talent (preferably at DE) and have a DL rotation we could at least work with. I don't see any scenario where we're elated with our quality and depth heading into 2014, but in signing Melton and a couple rotational options already, we've done a reasonable job avoiding catastrophe to this point.

several points first:

1. I like the Melton deal a lot BUT it could be a 1 year deal if he underperforms or gets injured or has off the field issues, therefore our strategy in the draft has to take that into account

2. Allen would be a progress stopper on a totally rebuilding team, but romo's career dictates that not be the case here. I would definitely consider allen for a 2 year deal that is reasonable becasue melton and allen on the DL means that its not all on the rookies and allen also provides emotional leadership that this team sorely lacks. If melton and allen perform to expectation, the DL could suddenly become a strength and i think romo has a 2-3 year window.

3. i think you cant have a DL plan but have to have a "defense plan" and a "team plan"

my ideal plan would be:

1. Allen on a reasonable 2 year deal (if possible), if this is not reasonable, consider ayers who is 28 (i think)
2. Still take donald or jernigan in rd 1 (preferably after trade down)
3. Still take 1-2 DL between picks 2-4 depending on value. There will be several DE/DT options there
4. Still take a 1 tech DT around rd 5-7 (there are several options there)

there is enough flexibility in my plan above to take a FS in rd 2 (like the terrence brooks or ward [shout out to @casmith07]) and OL in rds 3-4 (like thomas/bitonio/turner etc) and LBs to back up the guys we already have
