Both sides can be true at the same time. And I do not know about you, but I have seen this slow developing play fail, with the defender playing off the receiver. However, when you see the defender dart in to make the stop, primarily it is a defender playing off the receiver at the line of scrimmage.
There is a pacing difference between the Cowboys tossing that naked screen, or even with another receiver for blocking, than quite a few other teams who utilize that play.
I'm not going to pretend I am intelligent enough to dissect this and offer the exact reason. But the success failure ratio leans toward fail throughout the season. Perhaps it's because they run that damn play too much.
Now I also get that using this sets up other options, which I illuminated in my reply to you. But I think back on Little Kellen Moore running this play twice in a row in a game this past season and the results was a pick six the second time and this board blew up on Dak.
