Blood In Blood Out, South Central, and Shot Caller more recently. I actually re-watched Blood In Blood Out on Youtube recently. It can be a bit cheesy for modern day, but forgot just how much was taken from that movie for every "realistic" prison movie since.

A so bad it's good prison movie is "Undisputed" with Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames playing a mock Mike Tyson. Weak plot but great action sequences.

i liked that it mocked Mike Tyson, ..loved Rhames portrayal of the Tyson like role, ..was straight up simple, ..had various gangs involved .....and had a good pace to it.
Wasn't this is one of Peter Falk (Columbo) last movie appearances ?

I saw where there were sequels to the original, but i didn't recognize or yet have interest in them.
South Central did have very interesting prison scenes and characters, but like American History X (which i loved) .., how much time was devoted in the prison ?

Blood In Blood out was amazingly a 3 hour long film, but so many intriguing characters, so many twists and turns, tactics and strategic going on, that it had kept me so captivated.
Thanks for the mention of Shot Caller, i haven't seen that one.

I didn't have any interest in the follow ups to Undisputed either and think that was the only good one.

That's a fair point on South Central too. I mainly remember the prison scenes from South Central vs the rest of the movie. I had almost the opposite effect with American History X and forgot how many flashbacks to prison are there. But both aren't classic prison movies you're right.

Shot Caller really goes into California prison politics and learned some things being from the east coast that don't really translate here necessarily. The Northern Cali. Mexicans/Black vs Aryan/Southern Chicanos mainly. But a good movie, good actors, good pacing. Definitely check it out.

Midnight Express & Papillion are very good!!! You need to see them.
I remember watching those movies when I was young and it really hit me in the "feels". I sometime wonder if it would have the same impact watching them being much older, because some movies I've watched later seem a lot more lame then I remember them.

Blood In Blood Out

Vatos locos forever! Can’t link the YT because of profanity, but the Big Al chow line scene is one of the greatest in the history of cinema.
