Best Sequel?

No the criteria is NOT that the sequel is BETTER than the original. That has happened in a few cases. I by the way do not think Empire was better than the original. Nor do I think Godfather II was better than the original.

I'm much more surprised nobody listed The Silence Of The Lambs until I did. That movie is a classic.

I don't consider The Silence of the Lambs as a sequel. To me a sequel has common actors, directors or producers to the original. That is not the case with SoL. While Manhunter(based on Red Dragon) is also based on the books by Thomas Harris the movie production varied greatly.

I can agree with that, but it's still *considered* a sequel which is why I named it.

I wasn't reading it as sequels better than originals. I was reading it as good as.

I could have mentioned the 2nd Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I liked the 3rd and haven't seen the 4th, but the first 2 were a lot of fun.

The 4th is a major step down from the original 3. Very little happens, lots of stuff that is there for no reason.

Godfather II is a truly great movie, feels strange to rate something even higher, but the Dark Knight was also very special. This shot is from one of my all time favorite movie scenes:
