He supported the Zeke pick.

A pick which is anathema to max value.

Keep in mind that I'm not a "Let's take a RB at #4" guy.

BUT over the next 5 seasons Elliott could arguably have more impact than any other rookie based on the his talent and how the Cowboys anticipate using him.

Now after his rookie contract is over... He could no longer be Cowboy or could be out of the league based on an overabundance of work given to him over his Dallas years. 10 years from now he may not be in the top-10 of contributors from this draft.

I wasn't thrilled with the pick on draft day and I may not be thrilled with it a decade from now, but over the next 3-5 years I could see a lot of production from the lad.

Yay ... more high round injured players. That strategy is definitely working. I feel like we're discount shopping at Bob's Discount Furniture ding and dent pit.

I agree. I like high risk/high reward picks, just not with high draft slots. I'm wishing the young man well though. I wasn't in favor of the pick, but he's in the fold now, so there is no looking back. I just hope he uses this time wisely. Learn the league, watch film, work out, etc.

I had no problem with drafting Zeke with the 4th pick due to his possible impact. In this offense, the RB position is much more valuable than it would be for teams that are not built to run the ball in a dominant fashion.

I wanted a QB, once that was not a possibility, I wanted Zeke. I just did not see the impact defensive players in this draft available at 4.

As for round 2? Jaylon Smith was a bad pick. It could turn out to be a great one but right now it is bad considering how many holes we have on defense. I understand the logic behind the pick, I kind of like the thought process that we traded a second round pick for a 2017 top 10 pick, but still I would have not done it and no other team in the league would've drafted him at the top of the second round.

Overall though, I liked the article.

They pick way too many injured players / future projects, and always waste their late round draft picks.
Doesn't sound like a solid plan to me. But hey, I am not a football GM...I just use common a sense approach.
Just how many of these projects have they hit on? Swing for the fence, and strikeout seems to be the batting averages so far.

If he is ready in 2017, we basically traded a 2 for a top 10 pick. That's a huge payoff if he heals.

That is the problem with the front office. They are constantly using 2nd round picks on high risk players (injury/drugs). Hoping they pan out....if they simple drafted a RKG player, that can get on/stay on the field.... maybe they could field a defense with potential instead of forced to play JAGS because of suspensions and hopes and prayers.....look at the second round picks

Jaylen Smith = hope he can just play football again alone be productive
Randy Gregory = Drugs/Suspensions
DLAW = Injury/ Suspension
Escobar = decent pick
Crawford = productive player
Bruce Carter = always injured, never liked football, in it for the money only
Sean Lee = great player WHEN healthy....missed more games than he has played (best 2nd round pick in the last 10years)

We couldn't have wasted a 2nd round pick on a better guy. He may never play but what a great guy, legendary. lol

DLaw was an outstanding pick. Look into the details of his suspension. No red flags on that guy.

Pretty sure Crawford was a 3.

I think Jerruh is a prospector at heart. Be it oil ventures or football.
He has missed so many times with players like this that he is due to finally hit one.
Isn't he?

The pick was a gamble. Everyone thinks he will be great if he eventually plays. How much we rue the pick if he never plays will depend on how the other picks we could have chosen turn out to be. Still with all of his talent and heart, it was probably worth it. The Cowboys have a pretty good history drafting players who can't play right when they draft them with later picks including my childhood hero Roger Staubach.

Most everyone seems to have penciled him in as a guarateed superstar. I'm not convinced he's ever been super, let alone an NFL future-star. Until he plays pro... he's basically Bobby Carpenter. That regard is fair and probably what's best (for him, and for his fans- if they really want him to be as great as they're expecting). I'm pretty sure he won't ever be as good as a healthy Sean Lee.

I'm not sure there isn't drafting pedigree on the defense to begin with...

Lawrence, Gregory, Smith, Lee...all 2nd rounders. Jones and Claiborne, both 1st rounders. That is six starters with high round selections...at least in strong potential.

Sure. But if the conversation is around Risen being a "let's maximize value of the draft" kind of guy...he can't be behind the Zeke pick. It's contradictory. For the exact reasons you stated.
