I agree with this 100%

To piggyback that, I don't understand the obsession with wanting to trade young talent for other draft picks. People are calling for Bennett, Barber and Choice to be traded for picks. Every effort should be made to keep young talent in house.

Rule #1 - Don't trade potential high reward picks for average starters.

Rule #2 - Don't trade young, in-house talent for unknown picks.

Really, it seems obvious.

Jesus..how is Bethea an average starter?

Unbelievable.

Because he is, it isnt unbelievable.

He isnt an all pro or even a consistent probowl calibar player. There are probably 10- or 15 guys just like him around the league, maybe more.

lol. He's only been in the league for 4 years and has made the probowl 2 out of the last 3. Making it most recently THIS YEAR.

Your doing your typical babbling and bashing. I suggest you stop while your behind.

Did he get voted in or went because someone else pulled out? Big difference IMO

Unbelievable.

Of safeties who played at least 75% of their teams snaps, only 6 players gave up more yards per catch than Bethea. Also, he had a plays on ball rate of 19%, which is pretty good, but hardly spectacular.

I would rather draft a guy in the first than sign a RFA to a large contract and give up our first. There are reasons why they didnt get the highest tender!

Alternate his 2nd year in the league. Which is pretty damn good.

Voted in this year.

In Jared Gaither's case, I think it has to do with the fact that they may believe they could move Oher over to LT where he is better suited, pick up a 1st and grab a RT later in the draft.

He couldn't be a fill in this year, I don't think at least, he played for the colts. They played in the big game.

I was not suggesting that because Bethea would be better this year it was a smart move, I was stating it just because it's probably true. You also know for the most part what to expect from him. Anyone at 27 has a higher bust factor.
This still doesn't mean I would do it, I am just saying. Excuse my typos as I'm on my phone.

a 1st round tender is entirely too high for Bethea. The Colts know that, and the league knows that. This is a move by the Colts to buy more time to lock him up in a deal, maybe around 3 or 4 years.

It concerns me the Colts didn't tender him a 1st and 3rd - if they really valued him a great deal, they would slap the additional 3rd round tender. Its almost as if they're baiting a team to sign him at point at a lower price so they can match

I don't think that is how it works..Cowboys talk with Bethea, sign him and if the Colts do not match the Boys offer they take our pick..

This is one player I would consider signing at the expense of our 1st rounder, not sure I would pull the trigger but I would think about it

I'm not sure if I'd do it but I would probably think about it for sure. I can say if it did happen I can't see me being super upset by it.

I would have liked to see a 1st and 3rd… better still a long term deal. While I don’t think anyone will sign him away for a 1st rounder, if I’m the Texans, Steelers or Giants I might stop and think about it for a little bit.

I watched almost every Colts game last year. Bethea is perhaps one of the most underrated players I've ever seen on a football field. The guy is a monster playmaker.

Colts didn't put a 1st/3rd tender on him because they didn't need to. Nobody realizes this guy is a beast except those who watch him in and out every week. Teams get to where they stop throwing deep on his side. He reminds me of a Mike Jenkins at Safety.

I'd give the first for him in a heartbeat. He's 25. Sign him to 5yr/26mil with 14 guaranteed.

Championship.

Yup.

I think JJ would like the "market" set the price for a couple of his players as well. He could then ink them much more quickly - or take the pick(s).

I'd pass for several reasons

-You never know who will be there at #27. What if Jimmy Clausen falls to 27, ala Quinn and Rogers and Indy gets another first for the pick. I'd feel pretty stupid. Never mind a guy like Thomas, Iupati or who ever falls.

-Safties imo are one of the positions where it's hardest to predict success from scheme to scheme. RBs are the easiest, you change your scheme for a QB, but DBs in general (and WRs) are the hardest to predict.

-He'll be 26 at the start of the season, so we sign him for a 5 year deal and then he's likely done. Yeah the guy we draft may not even have a 5 year career, but I'll take the unkown at this point. If he signs the tender (thus making him tradable after the deadline to sign RFA), I'd consider calling Indy depending on how the board looks at 27, prior to that, no.
