They both got drafted the sane year. Tyron’s young enough to make pro bowls for 3 -5 more years. Watt fell off sooner too. Tyron’s still elite when healthy. Who had the better career?

I don’t think Tyron will be around much longer he can’t stay healthy. No way will he make it 3 to 5 more years. Watt will go down as the greater player. He’s won 3 defensive player of the year awards. He’s a slam dunk first ballot Hall of Famer. I feel pretty confident Tyron will get in the Hall of Fame as well, but may not on the first ballot.

Trent Williams is older than Tyron.

I say Smith. Both had great careers and are HOFers. While both had injuries, when Smith plays he is still dominant. This season in particular. Terrible injury, quietly gets into playing shape, and goes out and plays like a monster. Smith is a freakish athlete. Sad that Jerry wasted his career too.

Smith gave up something like 3 pressures and a sack against the Eagles.

JJ is a first ballot HOFer. Shame his career was also wasted, but he was clearly the best defensive player on the field for years. Tyrone is also really great and will probably have a few good years ahead of him. PS. Part of difference was JJ played a position where splash plays happened and everyone saw them on highlight shows. Hell he was Aaron Donald great until he got injured.

Tyron is lucky to play 3-5 more games! I mean he's still here, clearly not the same player, time to move on next year or make him a swing tackle at a reduced rate

Tyron should of retired 4 years ago. He was great player but has declined to the point of holding calls and giving up sacks too much. Dude can't run anymore to run block either. He is no more than depth but gets to start because he is living off his reputation from years ago.

It's hard to compare a Left Tackle and a defensive end head to head and say who's better.
Not like they were division rivals and they played head to head 20 times in their career.

Tyron Smith at his peak was a top left tackle in the NFL. Right along with Joe Thomas, and both made the all decade team.
JJ Watt at his peak was damn near a 20 sack per year player. 3 DPOY, and also all decade team member.

I always think back and say what if we had Watt in 2014/2016 could we of gotten by the Packers, but then we would of had a huge question mark at LT/inconsistent Free there.

I think both can still play at a good enough level for more years if they wanted too. Watt should end the year with double digit sacks and Smith is playing RT for the first time in a decade and coming off a severe injury, so him being off for the Eagles game isn't too surprising.
But, Watt is calling it quits and to be determined for Smith. But I believe 20+ teams would take Smith, injury concerns and all, in a heartbeat next year.

Watt plays a higher profile position, but I think Tyron is better at what he does...or at least he was better.

2 weeks off an injury that was supposed to end his season. To me those sacks were coverage and Dak holding the ball too long. I don’t blame them on Tyron. He has been very good off a bad injury.

Tyron's contract is up after next year. That could also be his last year unless Jerry wants to sign him to a 1 or two year deal. At some point though, if Tyler Smith is the LT of the future, they will need to move on from Tyron.

But Tyron meets the criteria for HoF induction. He was dominant in his time. JJ Watt was the same so they both go in. JJ might have had a more flashy career with some spectacular plays.
