Better personnel, why is D worse!

Does anyone have a principled explanation for why our defense — which added Quinn, Bennett, Hyderabad, Covington, and essentially lost only Ty Crawford and Taco — is so much worse than last year’s unit, which was top 10? I seriously cannot understand it.

The LBers. They also badly miss Tyrone Crawford.

The defensive problems are being overstated anyways. The Lions had like 310 yards and only had 2 real drives.

In Jeruhs own words last season against the Rams, they wearn the wrong cleats man! Garrett needs to buy them the right ones by gosh!

They also lost Gregory for what its worth. I think there are a few reasons the defense looks worse this year.

1. The defense looked really good at times last year. The way Smith and LVE were playing gave us a lot of hope this defense would be much better this year with another year of experience for both of those guys. Neither is playing as we expected. The run defense in particular has suffered because of it. But its also true that they are not playing as well in the passing game. I recall LVE dropping back and disrupting some passes in coverage.
2. I also think we expected Chidobe Awuzie to be better after showing a lot of promise last season.

But the reality is, the Cowboys did not fix the two biggest problems from a year ago. Safety and DT. This defense, with the exception of Quinn who has replaced Randy Gregory, is the same. But recall how the Colts and Rams exploited the middle of the defense? I actually think the pass defense hasn't been that bad with the exception of the lack of interceptions.

I don't think the loss of Tyrone Crawford is that big of a deal, at least Not at DT. The addition of Bennett mitigates that to a certain extent. Maybe using him at DE when Quinn takes a breather would be better than Armstrong. I know this, when opponents see Armstrong and Covington out there together, they run at them with success.

They looked like this at the end of last year.

I think the biggest issue is that Vander Esch and Jaylon are vastly overrated. They are playing awful. Teams have figured out they're the weakness.

And you see what the depth behind Heath looks like.

Jeff Driskell and Bo Scarborough put up 300 yards and 27 points and people still think our “defensive problems are being overstated “

can’t make this stuff up

Well we brought in the best defensive mind in football
I heard that here

I can't buy now that both Smith and LVE were one year wonders. It's not like they only feasted on terrible teams.

Maybe teams are noticing that they get stuck on the first read or something but IMO both are athletic and have enough smarts to be successful.

Linebacker play has been awful, to say the least and we miss Crawford more on the DL than people probably realize. Was really hoping LVE would've came down with that interception yesterday to halt some of the criticism for at least a week.

Where we are especially bad is special teams. We are constantly giving teams field position they do not deserve and having to defend and are constantly making our QB drive the ball 85-90 yards down the field.

Better personell but the same coaches and the same old fashioned scheme.

You can't expect different results by trying the same things that don't work even if you have better materials.

300 yards is nothing in today's NFL, especially when half of that comes on two drives.

Bo Scarborough didn't do anything.

well if you watched the game it felt much worse then it actually was, the 27 points 2 drives one came from short field like at the 20 from a fumble and another inside the 50 from poor ST.. he asked about mostly the dl pass rush and we only gave up 196 passing.. another bad tackling day for runs especially a few by Driskell..

but like I said giving them easier short fields didnt help the defense..no excuse but it wasn't as bad as it actually felt..

BTW getting tired of hearing about backups, I mean here they say next man up no excuse..

so look around the league

Minshew
Allen
Moore
TeddyB
Rudolph

and others have WION a ton of games this season.. Foles won a SB and on the RBs well backups are rotational guys typically but next man up around heres states you should be able to still be in games missing players,

why is that double standard, we arent the only team getting beat by Backup QBs let alone RBs etc etc

I am concerned with ST and poor run tackling etc but the new DL has very good pass rush..its the other stuff including missing Heath is proving n egg on your faces wanting Wilson/Thompson who both played a lot yesterday and both looked bad..Heath also plays ST, odd how that narrative and possible TCrawfords missing is proving they were better then their backups..

Maybe the defensive players need to do the Dak dance before the games

Vanderesch did not miss tackles at all his rookie year -

Cant say that right now!

I have not put the effort into this exercise, but I would be interested to know what our opponents TOP is this year vs last year now that we are more of a pass oriented offense instead of just shortening the game with Elliott for 4 quarters.
