I love emmitt but i think Barry was a better PURe runner. He never had a good o-line and he was always the focus of the defensive attack.

you know thats not entirely true right? i'm not saying his line was as great as ours turned out to be but he had a good line him self. and if im not mistaken the Lions at the time had some very good wr.

i wish i could find the article where some of the linemen of the lions were talking about how if it was a sweep to the right barry would turn it into a up the middle run

I'll take the player who doesn't hold the NFL record for yardage lost from the line of scrimmage.

Herman Moore and Brett Perriman. Each had 100+ reception seasons while playing with Barry.

Barry could 4000 yards more than Emmitt and I still wouldn't want him. It has NOTHING whatsover to do with yardage.

Understand Hos ...I feel the same way about Westbrook.

Almost every year that Emmitt had 2 Pro Bowl guys in front of him Barry did too.

This is not true!!!

I included Jay Novacek as he was pro-bowl and blocked for Emmitt on the line also, but even if you subtract him, Emmitt still ALWAYS had twice as many probowlers blocking for him. ALWAYS! Everytime Barry had two pro-bowlers, Emmitt had FOUR!

For two years all but one person on the offensive line were probowlers! That is a FREE PASS to be NFL rushing leader that season.

1992:
Detriot: Lomas Brown
Dallas: Mark Stepnosk, Nate Newton, Jay Novacek
1993:
Detriot: Lomas Brown
Dallas: Mark Stepnoski, Nate Newton, Jay Novacek
1994:
Detriot: Lomas Brown
Dallas: Mark Stepnoski, Erik Williams, Nate Newton, Jay Novacek
1995:
Detriot: Lomas Brown, Kevin Glover
Dallas: Larry Allen, Nate Newton, Mark Tuinei, Ray Donaldson, Jay Novacek
1996:
Detriot: Lomas Brown, Kevin Glover
Dallas: Larry Allen, Erik Williams, Nate Newton, Ray Donaldson
1997:
Detriot: N/A
Dallas: Larry Allen, Nate Newton

ok, so then you should include WR because they block too, hell why dont we add the apposing teams defense because they both could be barely tackled from time to time

Nah, I included Novacek because he played on the line. Blocking is one of the tightends primary responsibilities.

Wr have a primary responsability to block on running downs, just as a TE

My opinion on this is NEVER popular. There are literally dozens of RBs I'd take over Barry Sanders. I am thankful he was never on our team. I do not care for a RB who will not get you the "hard yard." Give me a warrior over the excitement he could generate with a big run any day. Take away his one big run per game and he was nothing special. In big games he was invisible. He left his team with 2nd and long plus 3rd and long too many times for my tastes.

He was great to watch, but as a football player I wouldn't want him anywhere near my team. Good guy, but a lousy teammate IMO. He walked away and lef this team high and dry. It was hilarious to me that as a team they had a better record after he left.

Then his nonsense about wanting to play in Miami and going into the Hall of Fame with a blank cap instead of a Lions cap. Those who love him can have him. I will never agree with you.

One last thing, the stuff about his sub par O-line is a joke. Lomas Brown was a fantastic LT and he had an excellent Center in Glover as well. Almost every year that Emmitt had 2 Pro Bowl guys in front of him Barry did too.

Emmitt all day, every day, especially on game days.

Damn right! Well said Hos.

If you want to sell tickets and show up on SportsCenter, but lose games because half of your drives are killed with -6 yard runs and you have to pull your best RB in short yardage/goalline situations, go with Barry.

If you want to win championships with a RB that MAKES his o-line infinitely better (that's right, not the other way around), consistently grinds out the tough extra yardage, blocks superbly, and absolutely refuses to lose, you go with Emmitt.

They opened up sme huge holes. But for sure, if the hole was there for a split second, Emmitt hit that sum***** and never looked back

I love Emmitt, but Barry was the better RB for me....given a choice of either guy in his prime, I'd take Barry and put him behind the line Emmitt had and with the QB and WR Emmitt played with who took some guys out of the box, and probably destroy any description of what the NFL thought a RB was.

I'd keep/prefer Emmitt (mainly due to blocking and goal line skills), but Barry would have done everything in Dallas and more. For one thing, he wouldn't have been caught from behind at the Meadowlands in December 1993. Emmitt was, resulting in a separated shoulder.

Smith moved the chains, pass blocked, short yardage, touchdowns, caught the ball and wore out the other teams defense and rested his.

Smith and in my mind it isn't a debate.
