Beuhler Question

With all the lamenting over cutting Harris and keeping Beuhler I was curious because I'm not sure. Has Beuhler not been injured? If so, had he been cut before being activated, would we not have to pay him an injury settlement? Could that be the reason he's still here when the kicking game seems to be fine w/out him? Makes more sense than anything else. What am I missing here?

Yeah, I thought about that as well. The injury may be the only reason he's still here. I hope when he gets better we show him the door and re-sign Harris. Bailey has been very productive as our kicker, and with the new shorter field on kickoffs, keeping Beuhler just doesn't make much sense to me.

Has Harris even been picked up yet? 24 hours from the time we cut him, if no one signs him, we can PS him right? Or resign if Beuhler does get cut.

he said he was ready to play this week. Him still being on this team makes no sense...

Beuhler saying he's ready and being cleared where we can cut him may be two different things, no?

It would be dumb to release him...Bailey while he is a great kicker, he can't boot it to the back or deep in the endzone...and 1 of these games it will come back to bite us in the ***

I like Beuhler but I'm sorry I disagree. We have a coverage unit who is out on the field and doing a good job. Many of these kick offs by Bailey are angled and the coverage team is getting down their and making plays such as stopping guys inside the 20 and last week causing a fumble. Yes there is risk of a return for TD but there are many guys taking the ball out 10 yards deep and returning kicks and quite frankly most of Beuhler kicks are not going out of the endzone.

Completely disagree. Plus, that Buehler hasn't showed up since 2009. He doesn't boot it deep into the endzone anymore and Bailey has been great. Cut this waste of space immediately.

I think it's clear that Bailey cannot consistently kick the ball in the endzone out doors. He's doing a very good job kicking FGs, but short KOs against elite returners is asking for a runback, just bound to happen. On top of that, if you keep angling kicks, Bailey is gonna kick one out of bounds as well.

it could but it could happen with Beuhler as well and has in the past. We have 10 other guys busting it down field they just need to do their jobs.

I like Beuhler but I don't think some thing with as low of a percentage as a possible Kick return for a TD is worth a roster spot

It's not just a KO return for a TD, but against NE in an outdoor stadium, I'm willing to bet that the Patriots had the best starting field position following a score than any of out opponents.

Against Detroit, indoors, we were still able to pin them deep, but I think games @ Philly, @ Washington, @ NY Giants and if we're luck and get to the playoffs, we'll need Buehler's leg.

You would be wrong then. There long was 22 yards they also had a fumble. TD returns can happen they don't happen that often.

We keep 1 guy on the team who may or may not prevent a low precentage TD? It is not like Beuhler has not had a KO return for a TD aginst him so it is not even 100% sure thing.

their long return was 22 yards or their best field position was the 22?

Here was the starting field position for the Pats following a KO

25 yard line (fumbled KO)
24 yard line
27 yard line
17 yard line
22 yard line

Most other weeks, teams are inside the 20 yard line. Against NE, we only pinned them once inside the 20.

Their longest return was 22 yards their best starting position was the 27 yard line.

and the best they did was gain 7 more yards from where a touch back would have taken them. I don't have a problem with a team starting at the 22 or 25 yard line as opposed to the 20 and it certainly does not justify a roster spot. Add to the Beuhler himself has had kick offs returned on him so again there is nothing certain about him kicking it out of the endzone.

Would you add a second "special" punter if you knew if would net you an extra 3 yards a punt?

I agree

Your talking about a year ago tho, the rules have changed. He can boot it deeper now. If anybody dares to return it, they will be inside the 15 or possible fumble...but kicking it 1 yard deep or around the 5 yard line...does not put me at ease

I'm talking this year, heck Beuhler has played this season as well had a kick return of 48 yards vs SF and vs the Jets one of 27 yards.

As for Bailey kick I like it I like the ball coming down 1 or 2 yards into the endzone and seeing our coverage guys go down and make plays that is football. We don't use the other 10 guys on the unit for nothing they need to go down and make plays.

Again I like Beuhler but I don't think his kickoffs are worth a roster spot when other areas need to have depth added to them
