Big Cities. Are they over-rated?

Ok. Quick question for those of you that live in large cities. My wife and I both come from very small towns. I rarely see roads that have four lanes let alone the six to eight lane highways you see in larger cities. I know not to drive in the left lane unless you are passing someone. We normally drive in the right lane the last time we visited a city, but it seemed that it always was turning into an exit.

So, my question is....Is it ok to drive in the middle lane? I mean just to drive....especially when you don't know where you are going. I sometimes felt that I was in the way. I hate to slow anyone down, but jeez....I seriously have no idea how people get around in big cities.

Yeah it’s ok to drive in the middle lane, just go with the flow of lane speed is what’s most important. If you don’t feel comfortable...the right lane is fine, but you’ll constantly be dealing with merging traffic at each on ramp and exits. I’m like a professional driver...urban driving doesn’t freak me out. You’ll find me on seriously tiny dense streets in N.Beach SF on a Sat night,to Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. Go ahead...drop me off in Time Square during New Years...I won’t flinch. I’m usually more annoyed with people who aren’t being courteous drivers, and being observant of two steps ahead and the traffic around them. My secret? Drive the roads during late or off hours and learn the streets and layout of things.

No wait!! I think it was Nikki Sixx snorted urine, and then Ozzy snorted ants!! That’s right....I remember now. They were staying at some motel while on tour where that happened by the pool I think.

Love hanging out in NYC, but the grayness of concrete and steel would be hard to live within.

I don't like big cities. DC/Bmore etc. but that's hovering about a 1M in the city itself. DC has only like 700,000 but have 3M including our suburbs like most cities but we're federal territory, etc. Hate NY/Chicago tbh. Like LA though it's similar to our spread.

Done with large city living. I am just not cut out for it. Spent a great deal of my childhood and a few years of my adult life in Houston. I just don't enjoy living with someone else always there.

This thread should be just titled “The I hate cities and why thread” Loool. I had a lot of fun myself, but I don’t party anymore, and it’s geared for young people with ambitions going places in life. So visiting is fine. Sure miss Central Police Station though, those cops were soooo eyeing me. “This guy....we don’t know who this guy is.but he’s just making it look a little too easy for our taste.” And the people were more interesting. Love people watching, best cheap entertainment ever. Nothing happens here!!! Plane Jane and Joe,with kids involved in school sports. I need some action...like a good old fashioned police car chase, yelling at me to “get out the way moron” as they go by me at 60mph bottoming out down the hill,as I’m trying to focus my camera for the low angle street shot. Maybe I can get my city to install a facade manhole cover that blows out fake steam,or at least run some mock hostage situations at the bank or something?
Do you guys know security at this new garage I’m in...quit. They had nothing to do and got bored of it. So I sit here every night on the second level because I like the aesthetics of the place. All pipes running on the ceiling shiny and new, good lighting and climate, with no one around at all. Got the whole darn place to myself. It awesome!! Even got new trash and recycling cans next to me,and a stairwell that leads directly out to the downtown street AND an elevator!! I’ve actually been secretly sweeping the place for them at night. It’s covered in a layer of fresh concrete dust and wood chips from construction dudes during the day. (It’s a big condo business project...2.65 acres) Figure by next year,I should have it cleaned up. Only got 20,000 or so square feet to go. What I really need though is a vacuum, but I can’t find any outlets around. There has to be some. Maybe I’ll ask the engeineers when I see them again checking stuff. “Look gentlemen,I want my new late night hangout spot nice and tidy, and you need the work done,so let’s stop playing games about the matter, and come to an accord.”

I have some very basic rules for what constitutes “urban city.”
#1 Vertical and density
#2 Brownstone alley’s with strategically placed misc litter
#3 Steaming manhole covers
#4 hookers and vice cops
Those are my top 4 qualifications...

!

I live in a city of 1.2m (1.75 if you include satellite towns), which has an 8 story height restriction in the city centre and 6 in the suburbs!

8 is fine,it’s the density, alleys, brownstone, and steaming manhole covers ect that really matters. You need that noirish undertow, with undercover vice cops shakin down the card rooms and brothels for the big score on Tuesday night, and the Ratzo Rizo’s of the world yelling at traffic for background effects. Like you could totally take Central Police Station and center a TV show around it. I love that place....cops screeching up on Broadway in traffic...”Hey you! Don’t you do it! Don’t make me get out the car!” Love cheap entertainment like that, even when I’m the one they’re yelling at.
