Gilbert looked good to me. Didn’t think Rush looked terrible. The Nooch was rough but he was playing with not a full deck.


I always wonder this every year…how much do you gauge in how a QB looks if he’s out there with practice squad level completion around him! How good is he suppose to look?

Did you see Gallup out there? I think I might have seen him in for a couple plays, so basically no.
Did you see Zeke out there? No.
Did you see our starting T or RG out there? No.

I realize the Steelers didn't have all their starters out there the entire time on defense but I thought Gilbert looked fine all things considered. It's not like he had the entire starting offense and a game plan to play with. He wasn't amazing, but most backups aren't otherwise they would be starters.

If Dak goes down for 1 or 2 games the season isn’t over if you have a capable backup.

So who are you signing? Who is available or was that would really be such an improvement over 1-2 games than Gilbert? Honestly the only guy I can think of may have been 34 year old Colt McCoy and I am not sure how much of an upgrade he would be.

What they should have done is draft quarterbacks every 3 years in rounds 2 and 3, perhaps 4 if it's a steal.

This gives the team an acceptable level of talent, an inexpensive contract, legitimate competition, future contract leverage, a potential high trade value, and a player that knows the team and system. After 3 years, they could trade him or keep him as the backup.

Getting a legitimate free agent backup is expensive, he would have to learn the system, and he would have limited value. Anyway, there really isn't anyone available that would actually make a difference.

Drafting a QB in the 2nd or 3rd every 3 years isn't going to dilute their talent when you consider the quality of a lot of the guys drafted in those rounds.

As it stands, it's Dak or bust. If he goes down, season over.

The QB play last night was nothing less than atrocious. How the team could be this far in to training camp with these backup QB’s and think that they could play is mind boggling. They’ve seen them every OTA, mini-camp and every day in training camp. Really disappointed they haven’t gotten a decent backup from day one so that he could get acclimated with the offense. They better get off their rear ends fast and bring someone in because if Dak goes down for a few games, we ain’t winning squat.

The same can be said about backup Tackle, although they have actually tried to least address the issue.

Should have traded up for Lawrence or Fields and let Dak walk.

Three thoughts:
1. It would have taken a huge amount of trade capital to trade up as you suggest.
2. Drafting a guaranteed great QB is difficult. There’s no guarantee either of the guys you mentioned are going to be great NFL QBs. History is littered with great college QBs who never amounted to squat in the NFL.
3. Jerry has no patience to develop a QB. He hasn’t drafted one in the first round since Troy. Drafting Lawrence or Fields would probably mean your team is going to suck for a year or two while they develop. Jerry has not stomach for that.

It's a little alarming that DiNucci was a pet cat for a supposed QB guru like McCarthy. I try to give the benefit of the doubt scouting players. We all miss a lot but I just don't see any traits in him that would make anyone believe he could potentially be an NFL QB.

So who would you bring in for backup?

After last year I could care less about backup QB. Andy Dalton was about as good of an option as you could have and it didn't matter.

Season rides on Dak and defensive improvements.

Gilbert will be a fine back up. It's not his fault the other qbs were terrible.

uh, did you guys watch or not watch the game because I am confused??
On the telecast they noted there are QBs on rosters now who will become available as a backup.
Naming Andy Dalton and Nick Foles specifically.

I don't know if Dallas adds any proven vet but they can certainly upgrade at least the QB3 spot.

And yes we all watched these guys last year so are very aware they are limited. That didn't stop knuckleheads from saying McCarthy sucks or somehow suggesting it was Dak's fault they missed the playoffs last season.

Ben DiNucci is not an NFL QB in any manner. Connor Rush knows the offense but he is not long for the NFL either.
Gilbert is what you get in a cheap backup and likely here at least as QB3.

you forgot the experiment with cwill at center as well..these games are not for kneejerk overreactions. They are for experimenting like with niswander kicking etc it what coaches need to experiment and se what they have in BACKUPS, find roles for guys and cut the ones they cant use..last year we lost that opportunity..

I totally agree with this. I like the every three years. It's enough time to know whether or not to keep investing in the project. If it isn't grab a new guy and keep hoping for a solid backup/starter to emerge.
