Big Mac’s ideas about ball control this week

I think McCarthy is right. The old idea that the Cowboys can just run the ball controlling the clock is not feasible any more with this OL. That ship has probably sailed. We just need to be aggressive early and often.

And stop blaming it all on the Oline. Fact of the matter is that putting the game in Dak and the passing games hands is simply smarter then putting in Zeke's. After watching Dak and the passing game go off last week, he obviously put two and two together.

From what I've read, this has been McCarthy's strategy all along. To establish a lead and then dictate gameflow to the opponent. Going with the running game later on, and allowing your pass rush to pin their ears back against a one-dimensional opponent.

Not in the first game it wasn't.

be careful what you ask for, Vanilla by Cowboys has beaten the Seahawks in the playoffs, if Seattle can run the ball and and win TOP, keep Dak on the sidelines we're in trouble.
we have to protect our defense, feed Zeke.
When Zeke is on your team, at least having balance is a good idea

However, that 2018 Seattle team didn't have nearly the firepower or aggressiveness that is one has.
It was the 2nd worst team they've had in the last 8 years....and we played them in Dallas.
This year's D appears to be worse (especially vs the pass) so it's a good argument to go after them. Just don't forget Zeke

Even if we do go pass happy, Zeke is still going to get his. I was happy to see Schultz contributing last week, but the 3 WRs are going to be the main targets. Scoring shouldn't be the problem.

Stopping RW should be our #1, #2 & #3 priority. If we can figure out how to do that, then it should be an easy win. That's a really big if, though.

but they did have the Top run team that year, and the way we beat them was being more physical in the run game.

You try to keep high powered offenses off the field, no better way to do that than funny he ball and win TOP, shorten the game.

So who wants to bet we run on 1st and 2nd down on the first two offensive plays?

I don't have a problem with that if it looks like it's to our advantage. We don't follow up a first-down run with a second-down run too often unless the first-down run puts us in short yardage. I think when you are looking at second-and-8 (for example), a run can be the most surprising play you call.

There are a couple things you can control on offense. You (the coach) can decide what plays to call, and you (the QB) can decide where (or whether) to throw the ball. That's about it. (Once the RB, WR or TE has the ball, they're just trying to make as many yards as they can).

Given those things, you can try to optimize around a few factors:
1. Maximize points per drive.
2. Maximize time of possession per drive.
3. Minimize turnovers per drive.

The more things you try to optimize around, the harder it is to do. I want a team that optimizes around 1 and 3: forget trying to control 2 (except with a lead at the end).

Yep. Majority of our ball control offense usually leads to a stall out, or kicking a FG. Time to use the weapons we have and “Strike First! Strike Hard! No Mercy!”

lol... did you watch any of the 2016 season? or Seattle ride it to the playoffs in 2017, or San Fran last season take it to the Superbowl, and as much as the Rams Superbowl team was considered flashy, it was a running team, Tennessee as well rode it to the playoffs as well.

Have you noticed that our OL now does not look like our OL in 2016?

SEA sucks vs the pass. Why play into their strength by trying to run the ball?

Your defense is gonna get shredded either way, might as well shred their weak pass defense too.

Agree with the Big Coach.
Ok ok..

But what I am learning about McCarthy is he is a bluffer and a risk taker.

He will play with no numbers on the jersey just to sneak somebody on to the Practice Squad.

He will fake punts on 4th down inside his own 40.

He will pull a zaney side rolling onsides kick to spook the other team in order to retain possession.

Watch him this weekend.

It will be lively.

:omg:

doesn't need too. if they think they're going to pass block they're in trouble, you keep giving the ball back to Russ with our D and we'll get run off the field

except running the ball with a rejuvenated Zeke is probably the best recipe this week. we have to win the TOP battle and keep our own defense and Russ of the field.
Winning TOP should never be the main goal or even one of the main goals. Winning the game is the main goal. You do that by scoring points. Winning the game has more to do with winning TOP than TOP has to do with winning the game.

lol...you score points of course, but you also have to keep a bad defense off the field and you do that by holding the ball on offense.

They have a bad defense. Keeping the other offense off the field should never be a game plan. If it happens, great, but not part of a game plan. Keeping the other offense off the field by trying to control the clock vs a bad defense instead of taking advantage of that bad defense is even more dumb.

The more you burn clock trying to keep the other offense off the field the less error you are allowed. Running 14min off the clock the 1st 2 drives and netting 6 or even 10 points isnt doing any good if the other team scored 14 in 7 min with 2 drives.

They are giving up 28 pts a game, should we take advantage of that or keep the score around 20 in hopes that a team scoring 36 points a game scores 19 or less? You think Sea philosophy should be to keep us off the field and not take advantage of our bad defense? Both teams try to control the clock instead of taking advantage of bad defenses? Try to keep the score low and with 4 min left ask the QBs to go out there and pull something out if their *** since they didnt take advantage of the bad defense from the start? Thats a great philosophy. Lol Its old, outdated and just dumb. Thats what Sea has done for about 4 years now with a defense that isnt what it once was and looks like they have figured out thats not the best way to go about it. Thats the way we have done for years and Im hoping we have figured out thats not a good way to go about it.

Woohoo!

All hail the UnGarrett!

Garrett always had the team playing in a defensive crouch. We spent all the money on the offense, but didn't Let It Rip. Protecting weaknesses and avoiding making mistakes instead of attacking.

With the addition of Lamb, we should be a mix between Run and Gun and the Greatest Show on Turf. Attack. Then with a relatively weak defense, attack to get turnovers and stops. Outscore the other team.

Oh I watched. And I saw better O-lines in those teams you mentioned than our very own. 2016 was 4 years ago. That was the last time our O-line reminded me of the mid-90’s Cowboys O-lines. And yet a lot of you in here still believe the mediots when they say we have a top 5 O-line. We don’t, and haven’t since Dak/Zeke’s rookie year. Lol

So no, stop with the nonsense that we can just ground and pound. I mean we can, but more times than not we end up stalling out, or kicking FG’s. Maybe they can prove me wrong, but this patchwork O-line leaves a lot to be desired.
