Big Mistake on Spears?

What?? Well, how about we just wheel a large Frigidaire freezer out there on hydraulics to plug the nose, THEN Ratliff can dominate the edge. Just think what he could do with that big 'ol freezer taking up two lineman. Ratliff sack master.

Rat was the 3rd or 4th DE before they moved him to NT.

If he was a probowl DE he would be playing it ..... he is a mediocre DE and a probowl NT.

:laugh1:Gotcha. I was more or less mocking the "Rat to DE" crowd but my sarcasm must have gone undetected.

I'm still down for taking a combo fridge/freezer Frigidaire with our 1st rounder though.

With all the teams running or going to the 3-4, I expect Spears to be gone. And only getting a 2 in return seems weak. I can't believe they offered his backups more money than him. Sure, he is not a stat guy but he is the perfect 3-4 end and better than either bowen or hatcher. makes no sense.
I'm not sure what Spears was going to make, but a vacated salary slot can be replaced with the same number. Couple that with a draft full of strong D-line talent (reduces odds others will grab Spears but also helps Dallas if they do) and the fact that any offer can be matched, and the risk is not so great.

Sorry I missed the sarcasm ....

With all the over reaction going on it went completely over my head.

Spears is not a difference maker but was steady against the run and could get a little pressure from time to time. I assume the Cowboys leadership has a plan for his replacement.

DEs in a 3-4 are not valued much. He hasn't shown much pass rush ability, so 4-3 teams don't know. I doubt if anyone is gong to go for him, plus we would have the right to match the offer. I doubt if anyone is going to give him an offer that's going to blow things out of hte water, plus bowen is not far behind him, so I take the 2nd rounder.

plus, this maybe a ploy by the cowboys, to get something in return for spears. they can't trade him really, but to put in a 2nd, someone may be interested and may sign him and we get a 2nd in return, specially if the team feels they have his replacement on the team already.

As opposed to the waste of a 2nd rounder on Cory Procter, I thought this move was a good one.

Although I do not envision a team trading a 2nd round pick for a proven solid, but unspectacular 3-4 end, I'd be thrilled if they did.

Spears has proven to be good, but he'll never be the player the Cowboys envisioned when they drafted him.

If the team could get an additional 2nd rounder to fill other needs, I'd be all for it.

I'd much prefer the prospect of getting help on the offensive line with that additional pick, where I feel they're really lacking, over the 3-4 DE positon where I feel they have more options.

If someone gives us a second for Spears, I'll be estatic.

ecstatic? heck, we might have an official zone party in vegas if we can steal a 2nd for spears

you really think a 3-4 team with a low 2 wouldn't do it? he is certainly better than anyone that would be available at that point.

The Pats have like 4 2nd round picks so if they don't like him he must not be that good.

I wish we'd just move Spears to NT already and put Ratliff on the end. Can you imagine that matchup?

My question is why do so many people want to take a NT that might just be the best in the NFL and move him to end? The guys that are coaching the D and have been doing that job for years, they must not know anything.

No lose situation IMO. If he stays fine, if he goes and they get picks fine.

I will never understand why people think Ratliff would do better at DE than NT. His production would drop, Spears production would rise.

Pass.

I am not an x and o's guy. Please explain your reasoning on this issue. I would think that Ratliff would excel anywhere on the line and would be better on the edge with his quickness, and our run defense would be better with a guy like Mt. Cody in the middle. Please educate me why you believe differently so I can understand your thought process. There is no sarcasm intended. I am looking for a legitimate well reasoned answer to this question, because I know you have one. Any other x's and o's people may feel free to also chime in here.

A tackle will be as quick or quicker than Rat is so it negates his biggest advantage at NT.
