Bigger needs on defense or offense?

Read a lot of postings on specific players we need/want. Reality is we need several players from this draft to upgrade our team. We can't have great players at all positions so spare us wornout cliche re caddies at all positions, etc. Needs are pressing--some more then others:

1. Defense:
NT - Backup/successor to Jason Ferguson (32)
CB - Backup/successor to Aaron Glenn (35) & Henry also turns 31; neither Reeves/Jones viewed as future starters.
FS - Can Watkins in his 2nd year become the player we need?
LB - Need better pass rush from this group yet stout against the run. Loss of Fowler & departure of Singleton also leaves us thin. We've got Ware/Ayodele/James/Ellis/Carpenter/Burnett along with Junior Glymph & Oliver Hoyte (if latter runs to this position under Phillips) but there only questions about they add anyway.
To satisfy these needs, we might have to spend several first day picks on defense.

2. Offense:
WR - TO turns 34 in Dec; Jerry brings him back in 07 but what about 08? and Glenn turns 33 in July. Crayton's a good #3 but lacks speed to become a #1. Hurd/Austin have potential but how much?
OL - Backup OGs are Proctor & Berger have no NFL game experience; same goes for OT McQuistan. We've got no backup center but doesn't OG Josh Beekman also play OG & C. Adams (turns 32) in last year of contract.
RB - Julius Jones has not been the explosive player we saw in 2nd half of rookie season. He produced more then 1,000 yards but too often his runs went nowhere. Fault of poor OL blocking, Parcells overcoaching/not giving him enough touches or was his rookie performance totally due to fresh legs mid to late season?
FB - If we re-sign Lousika Polite one more time, I'm throwing the TV out the window. Can Hoyte become a receiving/running FB or will he return to LB under Phillips?
QB - We need young developmental #3 QB so maybe we draft a QB on 2nd day, go with current #3 Baker or sign another undrafted QB from 07 draft.
TE- Think we need add a #3 TE who can block & catch; does TE Kevin Boss (maybe in 6th round) fit this bill?

That's 6 offensive positions we need filled but none (except WR) should even be considered first rounders.

3. Ironic we've spent so much attention on defense yet still needs be addressed.

4. We've got enough weaknesses on this team that we should be able get at least 2-3 future starters without overreaching. Of course 1-2 players fall to us at #22 everything goes out the window cause that might raise the possibility of adding draft picks by trading down in first round & adding at least a 3rd rounder & 4th as well. Only question is which position do Cowboys view as having highest priority against players available when we draft. So long as we stick to BPA from above positions we should be okay but we better not do anything stupid and draft a TE, PK or anything like that high and frankly we shouldn't move up cause we got too many needs to fill.

5. Finally don't think we should trade Julius Jones cause whatever we get for him would have to be used draft another RB; Tyler Thompson hasn't shown he anything more then a straight ahead runner and this is his 3rd season with us.

On defense, the personel is there, we just need someone to orchastrate them. Phillips is that someone.

Our bigger needs are OL, WR, and possibly RB if the organization has lost some faith in JJ

It sounds like they already have with some of us thinking "well trade JJ, 3rd, 5th and Bradie James for the third pick." they sound stupid.

I lean towards drafting for D. Not because of counting up the needs of either side of the ball. We need to be dominant on one side of the ball and we are closer on D IMHO.

Just as important.......the players we draft will not have as much impact as changing HC's.

I think we should address offence...

our WR's are getting older......Adams is declining......and our B's are solid but with JJ being a FA next year....I think we need to look at that soon.....

On defence....alot of money invested there already....would like to see another impact LB.......not sold there yet.....and a backup DB to groom....glenn has one more year left.....and safety is always a concern...

I'm sick of drafting defense in the first year after year.....saying that i think we'll go defense again. I wouldnt mind a WR at 22 though.

We have long neglected our offense in the first. We are fortunate to have what we have with mid round picks and free agency.

In my opinion, we need to start focusing on drafting the big guys. Not enough trench fighters get drafted high. I'd like to see some OL, taken, even if not in the first round.

It is my opinion that you draft one of the following in nearly every draft:

1) DB
2) OL
3) QB
4) RB

Just looking toward the 2008 season, I think are most glaring needs are on offense: left tackle and wide receiver. Without injury, there shouldn't be any glaring needs this year, so I would look to satisfy the 2008 needs first.

NT would be the only postion of need pick. Otherwise I say BPA. We are not in such dire straits as we need to draft a WR or Olineman. And we are not through in FA yet, who knows what the future holds there?

My goodness.

We already spent $50 Million plus on the OL.

Looks like TO, Glenn, and Crayton are gonna rock, again.

We have a great combo at RB.

Our Pass Defense is terrible [#24 in the NFL in 2006]

Lets draft a CB with our first pick.

NT ?

We already have a starting NT. He's also paid very well to play.

Shouldn't the Cowboys draft a CB? We are in serious need of a player at that position.

CB is the smart move at #22, if Houston is there we have to grab him. He is gonna be a stud in the NFL.:starspin

depending on what Wade thinks of the Mont, then someone to groom to take over for Ferguson and for the moment back him up has to be high on the list. A CB is a good idea due to Glenns age, and if we could get someone that can play either #2 CB or FS (reevis or McCauley) that might just be the way to go for the first. In the second see if there is a good NT - if not look at maybe a G/C guy; or a burner at WR.

1. Defense:

Looking at the defensive depth chart, thee are a lot of players shown that either are camp fodder, or, long shots to ever contribute to the team.

At cornerback, there is Quincy Butler, Nathan Jones, and Jacques Reeves.

At safety, there is Abram Elam, Tony Parrish, and Keith Davis.

At defensive end, there is Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher.

At defensive tackle, Montavious Stanley.

At linebacker, there is Carl-Johan Bjork, Junior Glymph, Oliver Hoyte, and Al Singleton.

I've marked in bold print those people I think can be replaced without affecting the team adversely.

Offense:
WR - TO turns 34 in Dec; Jerry brings him back in 07 but what about 08? and Glenn turns 33 in July. Crayton's a good #3 but lacks speed to become a #1. Hurd/Austin have potential but how much?

TE- Think we need add a #3 TE who can block & catch; does TE Kevin Boss (maybe in 6th round) fit this bill?

At guard, Joe Berger and Marco Rivera

At quarterback, Matt Baker,

At fullback, Lousaka Polite,

At running back, Keylon Kincade and Tyson Thompson,

At tight end, Tony Curtis, Brett Pierce, and Jason Randell,

And at wide receiver, Damarius Bilbo, Jamaica Rector and Jerheme

Urban
.

Again, those marked in bold are my choices for the Turk to visit.

There is a lot of room to improve this team, even if only with backup players.

best player available, but I favor a dramatic trade down for an impact player.

I am thinking that I am about tired of going for the 'pretty' and high profile players in Day One and the start of Day Two...draft a bunch of players that are going to continually push issues and be difference makers in contributing roles....

Give me Ben Grubbs OG, Tank Tyler NT, Ryan McBean DE, Zack DeOssie DE/OLB, and Desmond Black MLB...in the first five rounds, and I'm going to be a very happy camper.:)

I have been capturing and watching the 91 season this past week and I have to say I think this team needs offensive playmakers that are younger.

However since I think this team is similar to that 91 team, we need another pass rusher. The 91 team was lacking another pass rusher and issac holt much like roy williams was killing the team in coverage.

I really think the first pick will be a defensive player, but my hope is that the team takes at least 2 young offensive players in the first 3 rounds.

Its funny too, I just put that draft audio up in the other thread and listening to the lead up to the fasano pick, norm was convinced Dallas was going to take gregg jennings if GB had not the pick before.

explain to me why would we consider releasing Jason Hatcher, our 3rd round pick ONE YEAR AGO?? Hatcher's future is secure with this team for the next couple of years. Hatcher can definitely contribute to this team. And I think Jamaica Rector can do something for us, but who knows. Rector could contribute in the future. We've seen flashes of him in the preseason.
