Would it upset you if I told you I truthfully have never ever heard of the guy and as of yet have not read one thing he has ever written.

How long has B. Simmons been around? I haven't heard of him either (but I generally avoid ESPN).

He typically makes some very relevant points, particularly with NBA articles. You guys are just whining because he gave no respect to the team this season.

Had he picked us for the Super Bowl, people would be on here talking about how entertaining his articles are and how his opinions are great.

No need to blast everyone who doesn't sweat our team.
+1.

I would like to say that, with all due respect, it seems that so many people are scouring the media looking for any slight, either real or perceived, directed at the Cowboys so they can rant and rave about how unfair we are all treated.

Bill Simmons is a funny guy and I enjoy his columns. He doesn't even pretend to be any sort of serious analyst, but even the professional analysts get it wrong far more often than not.

He's been on the national scene for about 8 years or so. He's got a cult following of fans, including myself, who find his writings pretty darn funny. He'll post a column or mailbag to ESPN.com about once a week and I think he's popped out a few books (although those books may just have been reprintings of his columns).

He is actually pretty knowledgeable about basketball, but I don't read his columns looking for any serious insight or predictions.

No, why would it? Personal annecdotes don't refute an argument concerning a person's relevancy and popularity to the public as a whole.

"Led Zeppelin is pretty popular"

"Really? I never heard of them."

"Oh, well there goes that argument, huh?"

(inc people saying "OMG you're comparing Simmons' popularity to Led Zeppelin???!! LOLOLOLOL!!11!)

:laugh2:

Good post.

The difference is that Zeppelin had talent. Simmons is like the O-Coordinator that had a few great plays in his playbook back in the 80's, but since then all he has is those few great plays that everybody knows by now. Congratulations, he's the Bruce Coslet of sports writing.

Dude, there are so many differences from Simmons and Zeppelin it's not even worth talking about it. That wasn't my point.

But I'm glad we got from "he's not relevant" to "he sucks", because that was really your argument from the beginning. Which is fine, because not everyone likes Simmons anyway.

Simmons hasn't been relevant or funny for years. His columns have continually been weak since he's come to ESPN and it seems like the only thing he is good for is Boston sports area fans and riling up the non-Boston fans by acting like a ludicrous fanboy. Of course he just excuses it as 'well, I'm not a serious sports writer.' In that case, he's not funny either. Just like MTV, ESPN tends to ruin everything.

He's actually the most popular writer for what's likely the most viewed sports site on the web. That's quite relevant.

Perhaps I'm just more tolerant of criticism against the Cowboys because I've lived in areas with heavy populations of our rivals, but I feel like some on this site need to understand that not everyone sees the football world as Dallas or bust. If it worked that way, there would be no need for other teams. We'd also likely be winning the Super Bowl every single year if nothing was wrong with our team, so I'm not getting why it's so incomprehensible to read negative things about this team from anyone. You don't have to be a professional expert to figure out that Dallas has plenty of issues.

I love this team, but we haven't done much to earn respect from everyone, so not sure why some people expect it so naively.

We can't just keep hiding behind the 5 Super Bowl trophies to hold arrogance.

Oh, I could care less if somebody doesn't sweat the Cowboys. In fact, I really prefer it to be that way. Ever since the 90's, this is an organization that gets their heads swollen too easy by hype and praise. The difference between those 90's teams and after is the 90's teams were ridiculously talented.

This is about whether or not he's a good writer...and he hasn't been for years and I'm still not convinced that being the most popular writer on ESPN.com makes him 'relevant.' That's the opinion of what/whom is relevant or not.

I used to read Simmons almost every day before he came to ESPN but in recent years I stopped because he became an overbearing, obnoxious, uninspired fanboy. And I don't think that him being employed by ESPN and becoming this type of writer is just a coincidence.

I like Bill Simmons but stick to writing 100,000 word blogs that give people headaches and leave the predictions to the experts.
