Billy Joel vs Elton John

One of the tunes that Billy Joel did that I did not see listed was Goodnite Saigon. I thought that it was one of the songs that meant something to him because he was not in Vietnam. I once saw an interview with him on this tune and you could see that he wrote it with a deeper purpose in mind. I believe that he was the only Son and Sole provider for his Mother and Family so he received an exemption but I think that may have bothered him a little. I don't know. Anyway, that was a hit for him as well.

Elton didn't even write his own lyrics... Bernie Taupin did it for him.

"Joel had Top 40 hits in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; achieving 33 Top 40 hits in the United States, all of which he wrote himself." (site wikipedia)

No matter, whomever was writing those songs was doing a pretty decent job of it.

Which proves?

When I'm rockin to a Elton John tune I never stop and consider "Oh wait a minute, he didn't write this!" for one second.

A lot. This is a head to head comparison of two musicians. One of the two doesn't write his own words, the other does. If you want to put them head to head in a competition, then this needs to be taken into consideration.

Elton does not rock. Even to an old guy like me. Yeah, he has "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", but for every song like that he has 15 songs like "Candle in the Wind". Both of these guys are pop, with a few upbeat songs. Neither guy is "rockin", IMO.

But, you are free to like what you like. I'm fine with it.

I would turn off the radio or turn the channel if any of these were played.

For some of them, I might also kick the dog for good measure. And as a kid, I liked his music, so it sure didn't pass the test of time for me.
:laugh2:
Have to admit, there were some seriously goofy songs on that list...popular or not.

EJ was guilty of that sometimes too.

I'm curious, which of those songs do you consider seriously goofy?

To be fair, Liberty DeVitto claims that he wrote or co-wrote several songs for Joel between 1976 and 2006. In 2009, DeVitto filed suite against Joel for rights to royalties. Gary Zimmerman, also a member of Joel's band, also filed claims against Joel for royalties to "We Didn't Start The Fire" and "River of Dreams". Joel settled with both in 2010 I believe.

imunna go with ellen degeneres on this one and say elton john

elllen degeneres :lmao2:

Elton could never get a girl like Christie (wonder why), but Billy never had the impact of Elton.
