The news is so various on JSmith I have tempered my expectations this year. I think that's prudent.
I do expect Smith to be full monster next year.

Right?

The reports vary pretty wildly.

One day he's good enough to cover Julio Jones, the next he's tripping on blades of grass.

I don't believe I've heard any members of the media or scouts say anything negative about what little we have seen from him.

Regardless, some fans look at tape and somehow see a guy that's struggling with his foot. I don't see it nor do I care to over analyze just to find something negative.

It takes time, as the offensive line takes time, but I think we'll eventually get there.

I still think Tyrone Crawford's position needs to be upgraded to really put us over the top. He's the Doug Free of the front 7.

While I don't disagree entirely.

Statistically----Crawford was our team leader by a margin for QB. He had more hurries than Suh, Fletcher Cox or Gerald McCoy. They all had more sacks but Crawford only played 14 games and was injured for plenty of games as well. Injuries seems to be a theme with him.

Now even though Crawford is being credited with a hurry...I don't see the the impact and would like to see better. I don't think Crawford is a bad player, he's just not worth the contract. If Crawford was making 3 million a year would you still view him the same way?

How Jaylon performs remains to be seen but his videos really appear to indicate that his speed and movement is back. Of course, a question still remains as to how much physical punishment and exertion he'll be able to stand on an ongoing basis. Hopefully, he'll be OK once the pads come on and thereafter. Getting fully integrated and familiar with the system is something that is yet to be proven as well. Patience is recommended.

More on Jaylon:

"I feel like me. I look like me. I am me," Smith told USA TODAY's Tom Pelissero. "Smith is still wearing a brace over the knee, but Pelissero described him as flashing "downhill burst" in individual drills during this week's minicamp. " "Smith also displayed a "slight limp" and occasionally needed to "take a beat ... to change direction and accelerate," "The nerve's regenerating, so I'm doing great," Smith said. "It's all God's timing." "He's starting to show that quickness and instincts," Dallas linebackers coach Matt Eberflus said."

If he's 80 percent and still improving, he can play. His work ethic and preparation will take care of the rest. Once everything comes together around mid season, it should be fun.

this all sounds good.
what bothers me is IF Jaylon is now flashing all this improvement and more to go, what was those that BLUSTER about Jaylon playing at a high level for the playoffs back in January?
If he has a slight limp in mid-June after amazing improvement, how big would the limp have been in January?

Great to hear that coming from Gil. The Godfather knows a thing or two about player evaluation.

I love Jaylon and I'm rooting like hell for the kid but my enthusiasm is tempered. Running around in shorts does not even begin to compare with full contact action in pads. They're gonna bring him along slowly and rightfully so. Anthony Hitchens will be our starting MLB this year.
