I wanted to go Foster too. But he had too many red flags:
1. The hospital incident.
2. The diluted drug sample
3. The shoulder injury.

I was listening to the Paul Finebaum show when he had on Reuben Foster. Finebaum was missing obvious follow-up questions. Foster was discussing how he wanted to get to a club and then he can start working on his shoulder. And Finebaum failed to ask him "What's wrong with your shoulder" or "What do you mean 'start working on your shoulder'?"

Furthermore, I believe that the Randy Gregory gamble made us gunshy drafting Foster. I hope this doesn't turn out to be a Greg Ellis-Randy Moss situation because Foster - if he doesn't have a drug problem and doesn't have a degenerative condition in his shoulder - could turn out to be a game-changer and a perennial all-Pro.
I think it was exactly the Randy Gregory pick. No way the organization wanted to take the same risk and have it not pay off again. Might've been a save face type of move. Foster, J. Smith and Lee would have been kinky.

After watching 10 minutes of highlights, this dude can read blocks with the best of them. Very smart and great instincts. Not the fastest guy but he's gonna be a solid dependable de who will get 8-10 sacks atleast

A small disclaimer: Those 8 to 10 sacks won't happen this year...or at least, I seriously doubt it. But I do agree he's going to be solid. And, to add to that, probably one of the more safest picks the Cowboys could make, all things considered.

Just get to the Quarterback and work to contain the run and shed blocks. I don't want you to stand up. You don't have to worry about any of that crap. Just get to the Quarterback and sack him. That's what this defense needs.

He had great stats last year playing against good competition. You are only as good as your last play. In this case, I don't care where he was the year before last. The guy played well last year and has great measurables.

Look forward to what he can do.

We didn't draft him. We got him on the cheap.
understood. but ro mcclain would scare me off questionable Bama backers for a bit.
let saban have him and keep him in line. i'm not sure other people can.

another thing to consider is we mostly play nickel now and if jaylon smith is healthy might have the best LB duo in football.
as impressive as foster is, he wasn't near as good as jaylon smith before the injury.

I don't know. Foster is pretty impressive. Every time he hits someone, the ball carrier is going backwards.

very true. but jaylon showed physicality as well as the ability to man cover RBs, TEs, and to blitz as he had the 4th highest pass rush productivity grade in that class.
many people had him the highest graded LB in a decade and the top player in that draft if fully healthy.

point being its not quite RB but why take any risks at all at LB.

i'm just thankful dallas got a defensive guy that will play through injury and is healthy right now.
he's likely a rotational guy but at least he's on the field day 1. and not in any drug program for us to get that awesome week 8 report of looming suspension.

Fair enough.
I am excited about the potential of this defense. A healthy Tapper and Smith with the additions of Taco and any other defenders we get could be just what the doctor ordered. And I expect a few rookie free agents to stick.
I'm really disappointed that Randy Gregory couldn't get his act together. But Jerry Jones isn't going to let him go. I think we ride his contract to the end. Maybe the league's position on marijuana will change by then. An available Gregory combined with the other defensive talent puts this defense over the top.

he really does a good job at reading and fighting through aggressive blocks and squeezing behind non aggressive blocks in the run game. I agree he's got a way to go til he gets those sack numbers. But, he should be a 4 down player this year.

What's funny is when I began my search for a potential DE in the first round I started with guys in the 270+ range. I didn't really look at Taco because early reports indicated that he would be long gone before he was an option to the Cowboys. Following my initial post to this end, someone informed me that they'd be looking for a RDE, in the 245-265 range, with good athleticism to turn the corner. So, respecting this individuals opinion, I scrapped me initial research and started from scratch, looking at guy's like Barnett, McKinley and Watt ultimately coming to the conclusion that the Cowboys may then pick a DB, because I figured they'd either be gone or not worthy of a 1st round pick. Then the combine happened and Taco fell...but since I was still under the mistaken impression that we were looking for a different type of DE I never looked back at him.

My initial research was dependent on what the Cowboys had. I figured they'd moved away from the old structure of the Tampa 2 with traditional LE to RE differences in favor of having guys who could play every position along the line. It looks my initial assumptions on that may have been correct, because Taco has the size to play any position along the line. Of course, it will take some seasoning first, but 2 to 3 years from now (and hoping the Cowboys continue with their commitment to add to that front defensive unit) and the Cowboys could give opposing offensive coordinators fits with the constant rotation of bodies up front.

Calm down people,Charlton is just a piece of the puzzle.By no means we can expect that a single player picked late in the first will become the minister of defense five minutes after being drafted. That is looking at this whole team building effort in a vacuum.

Jackson & Tak were their original targets. They had to go another direction.

honestly ufcrueles: I said that in 2014 and I was dead wrong. I expected more in 15 then disaster stroke. 2016 i was looking for a 15 repeat but the D/line
give some credible performances. I expect at minimum the same 2017 . Will that make fans happy,no. 2018 this 2017 draft will mature IMO

Yup, I think we were all wrong in 2014 and 2017 was quite a surprise as well. You never know, but I don't feel good at all about this year. Hope I'm wrong for sure.

He can but he is not quick enough to play RDE.

He appears to lack a bit from elite but he is getting off the snap very well. He must be very strong as well although how strong against NFL players is another thing. I see him as a SDE but I think he can play some on the weak side. Putting him there would depend on the T and the QB as well as how the offense was getting the ball out. So it's matchups against OL and QB as well as offensive scheme.
