Bobby Carpenter's Failed Heroics

Not sure if anyone else saw, but on the Saints 4th and 10, Bobby Carpenter was right there to make the game-saving tackle and as usual was "out of position" without any physical play whatsoever. Colston made the catch, pivoted, and ran for the 1st.

Carpenter needs to be cut. He also took a horrible angle and was blocked out on the screen pass to Pierre Thomas that set up a Saints touchdown.

Yep. Saw it. Turned to a buddy and didn't have to say a word. He knows my level of disgust with Barbie on the team and just started laughing. Go be a soft nickel lb/st player elsewhere.

Let's hope JWill can step up next year because IMO more than anything this team lacks speed/athleticism in the middle of the field at ILB and S. Sensabaugh has helped matters some at S but we're woefully slow and lack athleticism at ILB. James and Brooking are solid as "thumpers" in running situations, but against teams like NO and in obvious passing situations, it would be nice to be able to shuffle some speed out there

Our nickel LB's dont cover well or play zone very well IMHO.....

Carp and Brookings are too slow to cover RB's and TE's ......

Hopefully our young LB's will step up next year...

Jerry himself referred to Bobby as a "finesse linebacker." And no one spins things more positive than our owner and GM.

Carpenter looks like a robot on defense. His reaction time is seriously impared. Its like he's not recognizing the plays in time to make a play...he's ALWAYS out of position. Between him and R. Williams, lucky to win.

Carpenter looked great in pass coverage...

The 2nd string TE went for 80+ yards and at least 2 plays have been listed where Barbie looked like a fool. Great my butt.

He went for 80+ because none of the other receivers (except for Colston, their #1) had over 43 yards. We were taking away their WRs and thus Brees was going to Thomas A LOT. Thomas has 10 targets for the game, most of any other Saint.

The Saints were behind the WHOLE GAME, they only ran it 13 times. With the Saints being a high powered passing offense, you expect some receivers to get some yardage if we hold others to low totals.

On the flip side most of the night he was excellent in coverage. He should not have been lined up against Colston. Bad play call or alignment by someone.

Wade Phillips sticks w/ his guys who are struggling w/ performance. This is admirable and the player sometimes has a flash but an evaluation should take place after repeatedly failing consistently. Carpenter , & Williams have had good games this year and sometimes expectations may be too high because of the lack of consistency. Roy Williams could return to pro bowl form.
Carp should sign for minimum and stay in his role.

Excellent post. Spot on IMO.

I told my wife when it happened the same thing. If he stayed in position and drove through the receiver then the game was over no first down. but for some reason he tried to get around and break up the pass.

We always want the guys to make plays. He tried, had he knocked the ball down we'd be singing his praises. Personally, I think he's been pretty decent for the most part this year for the role he is playing.

:horse: We all know where the need to upgrade.

Carpenter looked great in pass coverage...was he worth a #1 pick, heck no, but he is what he is, and I think he's played the pass better than the guy whom he replaced...Burnett. There was a deep pass down the middle last night that Carpenter ran with the guy and turned like a DB.

Am I happy that Bill Parcells hates "stars" and only wants guys he thinks are blue collar types so he can take all the credit....NO, but as far as the role Carpenter is asked to play in the nickel, I think he's been excellent.

I agree. Carpenter is really outstanding in coverage. He looked like a DB on a few plays last night. Most LBs just can't run much less cover the way he does. He's just below average in being physical. He got caught out of position on some running plays last night. But he is improving a little there. I gotta cut the guy some slack for a few plays last night. Overall he's doing his role very well. In fact so well it's going to take some doing to move him out of that nickel role IMO.

I'm Writing In Caps Because I Want To Be Loud--carpenter Is Not My Favorite Player But He's The Best We Have At His Position--give Us All A Break And Just Leave It Alone

Yes I saw him try and make a play on the ball and in doing so it allowed the receiver to get the 1st. I also saw some plays through out the game where Carpenter made some nice plays including a deep ball down the seams.

When they feel he is ready I'm sure he will see playing time until then Dallas can't afford to put players who are not ready into these critical games. Face it the staff get the chance to see these guys day in and day out I would think they would have a better feel about a player being ready and understanding the job they ask from that position

"Am I happy that Bill Parcells hates "stars" and only wants guys he thinks are blue collar types so he can take all the credit.."

Your hatred of BP has reached the stage of insanity....

Seriously, what does it say about the other LBs who can't beat out Carpenter? Not much.

Or is it the case that Wade is being stupid and using Carpenter for his experience over lack of talent.

Hoepfully, we can get maybe a 7th rd pick for him next year. Or a player for player trade. Like another highly drafted player who hasn't produced.

Can't cry too much. Carpenter has been as productive or more productive than Jamarcus Russell, Heyward-Bey, and McFadden.
