Why did he leave L-Ville?

To take the job with the Atlanta Falcons.

He quit the falcons after 10-13 games.

Went to Arkansas.

Had the motorcycle accident and in doing so it came out he was having and affair with a mistress that was a former VolleyBall player at Arkansas so they let him go.

He went to Western Kentucky after that.

Now with Charlie Strong gone it seems the Cards want Petrino back.

What really did him in at Arkansas was that he got his mistress a job with the university. That put the school in a precarious position. It was one thing to have an affair. It is another to put the school in the position for any possible litigation.

I'm one of those that thinks this is a smart hire. The guy is a darn decent college coach. A slimeball sure, but that comes with the territory.....

Hope Louisville put in an obscene buy-out and a morals clause so he can't leave them hanging again. Don't know him personally, but his press reads like he is about as scummy as one can get.

Petrino is a good head coach who wins everywhere he goes.
Arkansas panicked IMHO.
Give the guy a year off, OK, let his asst handle one season but that school is hurting right now after being a legit top 20 program.

Petrino will keep Louisville in the mix.

He has done some VERY questionable things and his morals are fairly absent but he is being paid to win games for a school that derives money off those wins.
Arkansas made a very poor business decision.
Louisville made a great one.

I'd rather have Charlie Strong than Petrino coach my kid but if my son was a HS QB I'd send him to Petrino before Mack Brown.

Arkansas had to panic. They were put in a bad situation by Petrino. They would have been fine if he was just having an affair. When he got his mistress hired that put the school in a bad situation. They were left wide open for potential law suits for hiring practices. It was best to just distance themselves from Petrino.

Not sure who exactly was going to sue?
The woman in question was a former student athlete that could have gotten that job on merits.
Arkansas didn't have to panic.
They could have suspended him for one year and used that year to determine if further punishment was required.

He's bounced back more quickly than the school has.

Anyone who had an interest in that job could have sued. There are people out there that look for reasons to sue and lawyers happy to help them. Perhaps she could have gotten the job on her own merits, which makes what Petrino did even stupider. Why circumvent the rules and risk anything?

When was the last time a university suspended their coach for a year?

That woman would never have bee hired on her merits; especially if all was honest. The other canidates had the qualifications for the job she couldn't come close to matching, unless you count what she could do behind closed doors in a motel room.

Anyone who didn't get a job or felt they got passed over for promotion or raises or any employee who just wanted to make the claim that it was a workplace environment that encouraged sex-for-jobs.

Josephuss is right. Arkansas had no choice but to distance themselves from him.

various....

Anyone who thinks Petrino is the only Coach to ever get a woman a job because she was his mistress is crazy.
I guess no man has ever slept with his secretary....
That isn't going to be a winning case in court. --i am not a lawyer but did study law in college as a pre-law student

As to lawsuits, they were going to be exposed the same whether Petrino was fired or merely suspended long-term.

No job has to hire the most qualified candidate and that's not grounds for lawsuit. --discrimination is.
The woman was Petrino's mistress not the hiring managers.
It was nepotism which exists virtually everywhere.

Arkansas panicked, period and is paying for that now.
Bringing in a B1G guy to try and win and recruit Texas is a strange and long shot hire.
The desperation hasn't waned.

Yelling? At the college and professional level there have been plenty of angry yelling coaches with immense success.
I absolutely agree at no level below that should it exist, though it often does and often at very successful levels.

As to QBs, Petrino was considered the personal Coach of Jake Plummer.
He was actually hired to the Falcons at 200% of his college salary to coach Vick but Vick went to jail instead.
That part of the Petrino quitting story is often omitted.

All in all Petrino doesn't seem very moral nor loyal AT ALL.
But he has been hugely successful as an offensive mind even having Tom Coughlin say he is the best play caller he's ever met.

Coaching suspensions...
No idea, as that'd take a lot of research.
Fair to say my approach is hind sight and would have been unorthodox but perhaps some other school learns from this.

Arkansas went from top 15 teams to winless in the SEC real quick.

The listing of job opening has a very specific procedure that was not followed. That is all that is needed for someone to file a suit against the school. Firing Petrino did not remove Arkansas' exposure 100%, but it did give the appearance that the school was trying to make things right. Perception matters.

Any lawsuit(s) didn't have to actually win. The school would have to spend money to fight them. That is a hassle. Cutting all ties with Petrino was a better option in fighting any potential lawsuits.

And we haven't even considered that his mistress could have potentially sued for sexual harassment. She could have claimed she was coerced into the sexual relationship with the promise of getting the job.

A very good post, but this point really makes me cringe. I hated this hire and last season reinforced it. Arkansas can't win playing smash mouth Wisconsin style football against the likes of Alabama and LSU. They don't have the players. They have to be inventive on offense like Texas A&M is (and like Arkansas was) to be competitive.

Arkansas went from top 15 teams to winless in the SEC real quick.

That is what is painful. There were a lot of "firsts" for the Hogs this year, and like the Cowboys "firsts", none of them have been good.
