The player we have in reserve is worse (Keith Davis). But the point with 3rd down is correct. It shouldn't be a problem if he is pulled for that duty. Until he shows he can make plays blitzing or in coverage, his role should be reduced if things do not change.
Overall, what needs to be done is change the way that Williams is handled. He needs to be challenged. He needs to be held and assume more accountability. He should be offended and angered that his area is constantly being targeted.
I don't know what is being said behind closed doors, but if it is anything like the enabling comments from his mouth and also the staff's then it is clear we are not taking steps to correct it.
There comes a time and place where the simple "you don't know" isn't a valid or useful explanation.
Teams are targeting his areas. Whose "fault" it is does not even matter. It is there. It is happening. If we continue to shift blame that still isn't solving the problem.
There is a problem, whether it is Williams, or the communication between him and others. It needs to be worked on, not ignored or excused.
Absolutely.
I'm not one to pile on, but there is a problem. Like many, I have been critical of the safety play here for a while now - and not just the performance of our strong safety. All around, it's been less than stellar.
Certainly, the opening touchdown to Burress was not the fault of Roy Williams. But big plays continue to occur. People continue to get lost in coverage. We do not play the ball well.
Who's fault is it? Once the opponent is lining up for extra points, does it matter?
I want to believe this defense will get better, and it very well might. Naturally our personnel will become better acquainted with the scheme, the blitz packages, timing, etc. Hopefully, we can add a relatively healthy Terence Newman to that mix soon enough.
Still, offenses know what they're targeting on our defense. Hell, it's there for all to see. And while Phillips/Stewart could utilize Roy Williams closer to the line of scrimmage, more in-the-box, he will still be called on to cover quite a bit.
The deepest third of this defense is what it is. Both guys in back can definitely lay the wood, and that's nice. Personally, I would trade some of that capability in exchange for limiting big plays.
