Bolt and why the 40 is so overrated.

anyone watch the live race just a few minutes ago? Bolt is a slow starter compared to the smaller guys but once he gets going he is ungodly fast. he probably would lose to a few quick NFL players like Tnew in the 40 but you know what the end result of anything longer would be. i wish the NFL combine would make the players run longer sprints to test overall speed not just short bursts. Running backs and wide receivers are allowed to get a head of steam once before they get the ball, and I think 40 times are usually obsolete at that point. the 40 is decent tool to grade cornerback as they often find themselves having to stop and accelerate in shorts bursts. what do you guys think?

I think shuttle times should be more valued than they seem to be.

Adam could make this thread his *****.

I agree, however, that the 40 is overrated.

No matter how fast Bolt is, I know he doesn't want to be hit.

Adam has already broken it down -- Bolt ran a 4.19 forty in the Olympic finals. And he would own Newman over forty yards, believe it.

He trains to slow start because you don't win or lose a race in the first half of it. His slow is still faster than most anyone on earth which is remarkable. If he switched and trained only for the 40 he would be even faster than the 4.19.

Bolt only looked slow because he was running against other world class sprinters. I'm sure his 40 time is still better than 99% of all NFL football players. If that wasn't the case, you would see some football players trying for Olympic gold sometimes.

The fastest football players could, and some did, compete on the track on a collegiate level with some success (Conference championships, regionals, etc.) but they seldom do it at Nationals. It's also just as rare to see the Collegiate national champ qualify for the Olympics and make it to the 100M final.

He would be faster than a 4.19 forty because Combine forties are hand-timed and likely cut the real forty time by up to 0.1 seconds, as Adam also pointed out.

Believe me, Bolt works hard on his starts too. He doesn't train to "start slow," that is just ridiculous. But because of the hand-timing, it is conceivable he would run around a 4.09 at the Combine.

Wrong, his forty time is still better than 100% of NFL players, believe it. Even against other Olympic runners, he had already pulled ahead by the forty yard mark.

It is just hard for me to believe that there are people in this world that are actually this lame. It boggles the mind.

They blocked your access because of your irrational love of Bolt. They found it to be disturbing. :lmao:

How many times does an NFL player have to run more than 40 yards in a game or season? Seems like they tend to run plays between 10 and 40 yards quite a bit in game. The shuttle and 40 yard dash are better indicators than the 100 meters for football players. You can't get the big plays longer than 40 yards if you aren't already beating your man after the first 10 or so yards.

There are maybe 4 countries in the world that love some sort of football. United States(NFL and Arena) Canada(CFL and NFL) Germany(NFL) and Australia(Aussie Rules)

Everyone else in the world doesn't give a **** about the game, so why would Bolt even bother playing? He already makes more running for 9 seconds than he would getting hit a minimum of 16 times a year for 3 hours every Sunday.

you say that but your whole logic is wrong. America is the only country that matters everyone else is just in the rear view mirror.

I certainly don't think sprints longer than the 40 would tell the NFL anything that's relative to selecting or comparing skill players.

If anything, they should look at times for the 20 at most positions. The only guys for whom something longer really means anything are WR's and CB's, and then only if they happen to be running or covering the fly pattern.

Most CB's who are quick in the 20 can cover anyone on a fly pattern because they begin with a cushion and ease into it. Football still comes to cutting, reactions, and studying.
