Bolt and why the 40 is so overrated.

i think they should run it....then run it in pads/helmets on a football field to see how well a kid carries their pads...a better indicator of football speed in my opinion. i mean are football games played on tracks in shorts and spikes?

Football isn't played in a straight line, either.

you say that but your whole logic is wrong. America is the only country that matters everyone else is just in the rear view mirror.

That is true, Americans are God's favorite children. :laugh2:

Plus, to say he's going to earn more in track and field than he could potentially earn in the NFL just isn't thinking things through. As a top-flight NFL receiver, let's compare him with Owens, he could earn $10 million per year on the field alone, not to mention the ridiculous endorsement contracts he would get.

But no, he's probably not going to be hurting financially sticking to the track, either.

wow i heard he ran a 3.6 in the forty.........

No, some goofball divided up his total time for the 100meters, and 3.6 is what it came out to. However, that's not how it works, because the first 40 yards is a lot slower than the rest of the race, because he is in full sprint, and the first forty you have to build up your speed.

anyone watch the live race just a few minutes ago? Bolt is a slow starter compared to the smaller guys but once he gets going he is ungodly fast. he probably would lose to a few quick NFL players like Tnew in the 40 but you know what the end result of anything longer would be. i wish the NFL combine would make the players run longer sprints to test overall speed not just short bursts. Running backs and wide receivers are allowed to get a head of steam once before they get the ball, and I think 40 times are usually obsolete at that point. the 40 is decent tool to grade cornerback as they often find themselves having to stop and accelerate in shorts bursts. what do you guys think?

The NFL is not about 100 yard sprints - what good would that do?

40 is a much better test for football speed needed. It shows speed and burst and acceleration.

It doesn't matter have fast you run if you can't catch the ball. Put him in pads and lets see what he can do.

true...but it is if you want to test a wr on a go route...or test a rb to see how he would fare in the open field...bottom line, unless you load all of there football gear on them, can you really tell how fast they are?

Oh, I agree about testing them in pads, and I'm not saying that 40 times aren't without merit, but they definitely take too much precedence for most fans. IMO, the 3 cone and short shuttle times are equally important for many positions.

Yes, 40s are valued too much. Watching the player and see how fast they are. If you've watched enough you can tell even if the competition is too slow. Then combine that with several 40s and other metrics. Then you have an idea. Some people are still faster or slower when the pads are on.

He would be faster than a 4.19 forty because Combine forties are hand-timed and likely cut the real forty time by up to 0.1 seconds, as Adam also pointed out.

Believe me, Bolt works hard on his starts too. He doesn't train to "start slow," that is just ridiculous. But because of the hand-timing, it is conceivable he would run around a 4.09 at the Combine.

Actually hand stopped short races are on the average 0.27 secs "faster" then electrically stopped. This difference results mainly from the reaction time of the time-keepers at the starting point, which is 0.23 sec on the average.

And afaik ...
there actually is no single, "official" 40 time at the NFL Combine. National Scouting, which runs the combine, provides three times per run, two fully hand-held and one stopped electronically. Each player may run twice, thereby yielding a potential six times. National Scouting provides all six of these times to NFL teams. The teams then do what they want with those times, or ignore them. Some teams use the best electronic time. Some teams throw out the fastest and slowest and average the rest. Some teams use the best time provided. And some teams use a time provided by their own scout on site.

So you can't say if a time is/was really hand stopped or else at the combine.

I agree that the combine should include the 100M. This would give us a true indication of speed. Most of the skill positions would run somewher between 10.9 and 10.1. I don't think anyone in the NFL can break the 9 second mark.

NBC owns the right to the videos and always deletes them for copyright infringement. Go to www.nbcolympics.com if you want to see Olympic vids.

I'm pretty sure I'm the one who mentioned the hand timing first, but bleh.

And the NFL 40 is measured by hand at the start and electronically stopped.

Then you have that guy on here last night claiming to be 6'5", 245# and running a 4.2 and he's going to try to win a spot on an AFL team. Maybe he is Bolt's bigger brother.
