Bowers not doing us any favors - unimpressive pro day

So what player goes in the Top 10 who we weren't expecting? Locker or Mallet? Maybe Quinn?

This is where scouting is extremely important. Here you have a guy who has been considered a top 5 player the entire year. He's injured and you know he's not going to show as well as he could have had he been healthy. The real question here is if the injury is such that it will prevent him from getting back to the player he was before.

Exactly. A bad pro day is no reason to drop a guy, not alone. You have to do more research.

That & his knee injury is more than enough reason to drop him out of top 5, most likely top 10.

Maybe he is helping us not get a guy with a 9 wonderlic score. :laugh2:

Maybe Jake Locker....I doubt it though.

I do think it'll be a QB. Lots of second tier guys are pretty good prospects, and a lot of teams in the top 10 need a QB. I think one will get anxious and take Locker, Ponder or Mallett wayyyyyyyyy too early because it'll be a competition to get one late 1st. I can see the Dolphins taking Mallett. Maybe trading up.

I think Kaepernick will go rd. 1 as well

In that same article it sounds like Ingram's rise may be falling to the later part of round 1 and early 2nd for the same reasons.

If a team like Green Bay or New Orleans picks him up, they will be even more ridiculous to stop offensively than they are already are.

Plus he would only help their time of possession even more so which in turn helps their defenses.

I doubt he falls to pick 40 or even in the 2nd round. I'd give up our 2nd for him.

Make Felix more of a Reggie Bush type of weapon and let Ingram be the bell cow.

I would LOVE to see a scenario in which we trade down, get a tackle or DE, and then trade back up in the first for Ingram. I wish!

Da'Quan Bowers runs a 4.85, 4.92 in solid workout

4/1/2011 10:23:43 AM

Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports Clemson star defensive end Da'Quan Bowers performed well at his Pro day.

The 6-foot-3 1/2, 276-pounder turned in 40-yard dashes of 4.85 and 4.92 seconds, according to Sports Illustrated.

He also posted a 4.34 to 4.4 short shuttle and a 6.95 three-cone drill.

Bowers underwent surgery to repair a partially torn lateral meniscus and didn't work out at the NFL scouting combine or the Clemson Pro Day.

I understand the thinking but i don't like it. I want to help build our team. If anything those 2 teams proved you DON'T need a strong running game to win it all. Ive seen people state there case for us to take a rb and even qb and wr using the BPA theory but i am still not convinced. If anything taking a guy at one of those positions before (being generous) the 4th round would be a total failure on our part. JMO

this is how i felt even before i saw this"

According to NFL Network's Mike Lombardi, teams have growing concerns about the health of Alabama RB Mark Ingram's knee.
The 2009 Heisman winner had a knee scope just prior to the 2010 season. Lombardi suggested that Ingram has an arthritic condition which could cause him to be scratched off some boards, and said "I think it could cause him to slip (in the draft)." Lombardi already didn't think Ingram was a first-round lock. We've tentatively moved Ingram to No. 33 overall in our mock.

lol, it all depends on who you hear it from. Obviously article-writers can't tell a good workout from a bad one.

Or, someone is trying to spread some Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt about Bowers to help themselves.

Mabey the op was an april fools or mabey urs is...........either way someones website is wrong

The two writers are focusing on different stats. Things like leaping ability and broad jump are important but so also is the singular stat of the 3 cone drill.

As this site suggests:

I have made a two-part criteria that potentially shows the correlation between the results of the 3-cone drill, the vert, and the broad jump in relations to a prospects ability to rush the passer at the next level. Obviously 1,2, or even 3 measured/timed drills cannot guarantee a success in this skill at the next level, but its very intriguing to look at.
To fit section A of this criteria a player must have been timed doing the 3-cone drill under 7 seconds. For section B, the player must have jumped a vertical of atleast 39” AND have done the broad jump over 10’00”.

Bowers 3 cone was 6.95 seconds. As an example, DeMarcus Ware's 3 cone was a 6.85. Bowers stats out a lot like Shaun Phillips in terms of cone, high jump and broad jump.

NFL evaluators reportedly left Clemson DE Da'Quan Bowers' Pro Day concerned about whether he'll be ready to play in year one.
One evaluator guessed that Bowers' surgically repaired right knee is "70 percent, at best." Added another, "He’s not ready. He was hobbling around out there. The shuttles were bad. There’s no way to sugarcoat it. He cost himself millions of dollars." The biggest concern is that Bowers' April 8 Combine medical recheck could reveal he needs microfracture surgery. That sort of procedure would knock him out for the entire 2011 season.

His pro day workout was probably forced; for me, I already know the guy can play at a high level. The opinion I'd value most would be our team doctor.

Sad, but he is losing millions of dollars with each and every draft pick that will go by him. If questions surround his knee, a team won't throw that much guaranteed money at him.

If he needs microfracture surgery, the question is. At what point *WOULD* you draft him if he was in a free-fall?

2nd round? second day? If the guy recovers fully, he will be a really good player.
