The guy is missing voluntary workouts. That means he's missing weightlifting sessions. The guy has shown leadership the last 6 seasons when the dolphin organization has completly failed him. He won defensive player of the year 2 seasons ago and the team went 6-10. Spare me with the leadership and dedication nonsense. If taylor had zero value the fat tuna would have released him by now. Taylor realizes there is zero loyalty in the NFL and he's exploring all options. Taylor isn't some 6th round rookie whom parcells can come in and disrespect.

Parcells isn't blinking and neither is taylor that's why this is so fascinating. Parcells owes nothing to taylor and vice versa. I'm glad taylor is standing up to this overrated clown.

What a completely ridiculous strawman argument.

If Terrence Newman quit working out and went on the 100% Pizza Hut diet and ballooned up to 245 lbs. in the offseason, are you saying the Cowboys shouldn't have a problem with it because he tried really hard in previous years? "There's no loyalty in football"? What the heck does that even mean in this context? The Dolphins are paying Taylor SEVEN POINT FIVE MILLION THIS SEASON, and they're paying him to be the best football player he can possibly be THIS SEASON. And unless he's doing everything he can possibly do to be the best football player he can be in 2008, he's basically stealing money for this year from his employer. Maybe you happen respect thieves, I don't. Frankly, if I were the Dolphins I could give a crap what he did previously. Matt Light isn't going to play any less hard on Jason Taylor in November because he had a really good 2002.

If Tony Romo decided he was just going to focus on golf full time in the offseason, not attend a single Cowboy event, grow a beer gut and just show up at training camp thinking he could just pick up where he left off everyone on this board would be freaking about it ... but because you and some other idiot Cowboys fans have some completely illogical hatred for Bill Parcells, you're supporting a low class move by Taylor. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are attending all offseason events, I'm going to assume they have them for a reason.

Jason Taylor is under contract to be the best Jason Taylor he can be, and he hasn't attended a single team event in the offseason. Hasn't lifted a single weight. Hasn't been to one single conditioning event. He's reportedly dropped 30 lbs. because of the dancing contest, and considering he like no body fat I'm going to assume that's all muscle mass, which means he'll have less functional strength on the football field. This is going to effect his ability to play the game. Tell me, what NFL organization would be happy with that? This isn't a "Parcells thing". Every single team in the NFL would be unhappy with that, and with good reason. It's bush league. Put half the effort into beating Tom Brady that you're putting into beating Kristi Yamaguchi this offseason ... what's "tyranical" and "unfair" about that when you're paying the guy 7.5 million?

Again, Jason Taylor has every right to persue acting or modeling or professional dancing if he wants to. Just quit football and do it on your own time, and stop stealing money from the Dolphins and cheating your teammates and employers who are depending on you.

As long as its voluntary I have no problem with anyone missing OTA's.
It's not just OTA's. He hasn't participated in the offseason at all. Sure, I bet you would be all hunky dory if every player on the Cowboys roster just decided they didn't need an offseason. I bet you'll have a problem with it after the season starts when its apparent you have a team of players who have no commitment to the game and just do the bare minimum required of them. (If you need a reminder of what that's like, think back to the Cowboys 1996-2002)

Go through life telling your employer "Hey, you only pay me for 40 hours a week, I'm not going to put in a minute more than I have to" and see where you end up.

I don't know about the dropping 30 pounds because I haven't followed this at all, but a quick Google showed this on several sites:

Dancing With the Stars Scorecard Age: 33 Best Known For: Playing for the Miami Dolphins and being named the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Lives In: Weston, Florida Partner: Edyta Sliwinska Advantages: He's got fast moves and the right attitude. "I've never admitted this, but I always wanted to learn how to tango," says Taylor. "I've seen it in the movies, and I thought it was sexy." Disadvantages: Taylor hurt his left foot at the end of last season and has dislocated "about every finger in my hand," he says. And unlike almost every other contestant who has been on this show, Taylor doesn't want to lose weight, "because I still have a day job."

I also saw where Taylor said he was in better shape now than when he won the DPOY a couple of years ago.

I think the offseason program is important and I don't like it when players miss it at all. It's more Parcells' reaction that is so sad. Why can't he talk to these guys like men? He doesn't give any respect to the Larry Allens or the TOs or the Jason Taylors of the world, and that doesn't make any sense.

Dude, please. Jason Taylor has never been out of shape or not never been the best player he could be for this year or any other year. I dare you to find me an opposing player who questions taylor's heart and desire for the game. Taylor could fly from LA to miami right now and be the best defensive player on the field and run circles around any tackle they put in front of him.

This has everything to do with taylor not wanting to play for the dolphins. He's not going to go the chad johnson route and make a public scene, but make no mistake he wants to play for a contender. When Jason taylor holds out of MANDATORY workouts or training camp then we'll talk. If Ray LEWIS Decided to skip a voluntary workout are we going to question his leadership skills or his conditioning.

This Dancing with the stars was planned out before parcells even got there. If Cam Cameron were the coach this would be a non issue, but because the big tuna is in town with his highly inflated reputation, everyone is supposed to salute and bow down to him. Go ask Wayne huizenga, Jimmy Johnson, or Nick Saban or any of his teammates whether taylor lacks desire when he's between the white lines.

It's only a complete revisionist Parcells bashing history paints it that Parcells went into that first training camp thinking " I just don't like that Larry Allen. I'm going to single Larry Allen out and make an example of him." I was at the first days of that training camp. Parcells was joking around with Larry Allen, talking to him privately, even going so far as giving him special exceptions on the conditioning drills. He didn't have to run with the rest of the team, he was allowed to run after them at a slower pace. It was only after Larry Allen quit on his own right in the middle of a drill because he was too fat and out of shape to finish practice that things soured. Parcells made him stand on the sidelines and work on his conditioning until he was ready to practice. That's a "lack of respect"? It was Larry Allen who didn't show any respect to Parcells (or anyone else in the organization) by showing up to camp so fat and out of shape that he couldn't do his job. He's a paid professional.

Likewise, do you think Parcells went to the Dolphins organization thinking "I"m going to single out that future Hall of Famer Jason Taylor and make an example out of him"? No, it wasn't until Jason Taylor let it be known that he had so little respect for the Dolphins that he felt competing against Kristi Yamaguchi meant more to him than competing against Tom Brady.

It's not like Parcells has never dealt with difficult players before. A lot of players with bad reputations experienced a ressurection under Parcells (Bryan Cox). Show Parcells (but more importantly your organization, your teammates and the game) respect, and you'll get it back. Ricky Williams has reportedly struck up a good relationship with Parcells, because he's dedicated and committed himself, working with the team every day to get better.

I bet it wouldn't be an issue with Cam Cameran ... he's a sackless doormat who let's his players walk all over him, which is why he's a loser and was run out of town after his first year after it was made clear that his players don't respect him. The Dolphins brought in a guy who's not a loser ... so this stuff isn't approved of. It wouldn't be approved under any organization run by football people worth their salt. Do you think Tom Brady or Peyton Manning haven't been approached for things like this? They're a lot more notable and famous than Jason Taylor. Why aren't they doing them?

I'm sure Parcells is the only one who isn't thrilled about Taylor's foray into Crocheting with the Stars.

I'm sure that as Tony Sparano sits back, and analyzes the tape from last season, and sees Taylor getting run over, run around, taking bad angles and wanting to be just a pass rusher which led to bad angles and big plays, that he thinks to himself - "Boy, I sure am glad that our top payed defensive player is playing grabass with a hot dancer instead of setting an example by attending team activities. There's nothing these camps could do to improve the horrific level of Taylor's play last season."

Nope. Parcells is the only one upset by it.

It's amazing he keeps getting jobs in the NFL. He must have some pictures of Huizenga and that Vietnamese ***** who bit his nose off...

First, I never said Parcells decided to make a target of LA before he went into camp. Second, I was talking about Parcells having a problem with LA's lifting program, which didn't include the cleans and jerks Parcells wanted. That seems like a more apt comparison to this situation -- the offseason program. There was no doubt that LA knew what he was doing when it came to lifting, but Parcells couldn't accept it if it wasn't his way.

And yes, it is a lack of respect when a proven player in this league -- even a future hall of famer -- gets treated like that. Parcells is just a bully... It's the only way he knows how to do things.

Likewise, do you think Parcells went to the Dolphins organization thinking "I"m going to single out that future Hall of Famer Jason Taylor and make an example out of him"? Is Taylor refusing to play against the Patriots? I guess I missed that.

When has Taylor had a rep as a difficult player? That's a new one to me.

And the fact that Parcells would choose Bryan Cox and Ricky Williams over Jason Taylor and Larry Allen kind of speaks for itself.

Yep, it was such a "dealbreaker" that Parcells was joking around with Larry the first day of camp? He wanted Larry Allen to participate in the offseason program with the team, instead of doing it his own way ... and considering Larry showed up for camp so fat and overweight that he couldn't complete his position drills, it probably wasn't a bad idea.

Is Taylor refusing to play against the Patriots? I guess I missed that.

Nope, he's just decided that Yamaguchi deserves his sole attention in the offseason. He practices 6 hours a day trying to defeat Yamaguchi and spends zero on Brady.

Maybe you're like the poster above who believes preparation has no effect on performance, but I guess Parcells and I are just "dinosaurs" who believe it does have an impact ... Parcells, and probably every Hall of Fame head coach in the history of the game, that is.

Maybe Jason Taylor hasn't had any previous problems, but he's clearly in the wrong here. I'm astounded you can even claim you don't have a thinly veiled hatred of Parcells, considering you're even arguing on Jason Taylor's behalf to put a reality TV show ahead of football performance. What other reason could you support such a ridiculous stance?

**Taylor is begging for your vote. And I guarantee that Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano voted for him. Sparano hasn't taken the same hard-line stance against Taylor that Parcells has taken. In fact, he's sent him some encouraging text messages. Hmmm. I wonder who taught Tony how to text?

LOL... See, that's why I hate these "debates"... All the hyperbole that gets thrown around. So now Taylor isn't going to spend a single minute on football the entire offseason?

I don't hate Parcells. Actually, I love a lot of what he stand for. The emphasis on defense, his desire to run the ball, his preference for non-problem players, and yes, even the offseason emphasis. It was music to my ears when he said, "If you're not squattin' and you're not cleanin', you're not doin' anything."

But he takes it to these ridiculous extremes, like making enemies with great players who won't do everything his exact way. If that's the only way to do things, why did Jimmy Johnson let his best players get away with more than his average ones? Or choose whatever other great coach over the years has done things that way... Which is most of them.

As far as Taylor's dancing, I don't understand it at all. I guess I'm a neandrathal, because I can't comprehend why any man would want to get involved in something like that. But as stated above, this was already agreed to before Parcells was even hired, and Taylor was probably contractually obligated to follow through with it.

So it's not even that Parcells doesn't approve of it, because I wouldn't either. It's the way he goes about getting his point across.

What blows me away about your thought process is that you fail to recognize that we are talking about one of the most team-oriented, selfless, hardworking premiere football players in the NFL.

Seems like he's earned the right to dance for himself and not the Fat Tuna.

He hasn't attended a single team event all offseason. Not a single weight lifting session. Not a single conditioning event. Not a single team meeting to learn the new defense. The only time he's ever stopped by the Miami facility was to say hi to his teammates for 5 minutes. Now he's saying he won't participate in OTA's, because he's putting his priorities on appearing on morning talk shows instead (and that wasn't decided before Parcells took the job). It's almost the last week in May. If he hasn't started preparing now, when? Usually in June the coaches and training staff go home or on vacation to rest up before training camp. Again, do you believe that preparation has an effect on performance or don't you? Or do you change your stance depending simply on whether Parcells is involved or not?

And assuming you believe that Jason Taylor is the embodiment of perfection and needs absolutely no preparation for the upcoming season, what about helping your teammates out? Think he might could give Jake Long some pointers on moves that an NFL pass rusher might try on him?

Again, this isn't a "Parcells thing". There isn't a single coach in the league who would be happy with this (although a lot of them would probably put on a good public face, as Sparano seemingly is). Jimmy Johnson may have let some small stuff slide, but nothing on the scale of one of his major players deciding he would rather focus on his Hollywood career over football while he's still an active player on the team. Parcells let some stuff slide too, including giving Larry Allen the opportunity to run seperately from the team as I previously noted. Including letting TO spend almost an entire training camp riding on the exercise bike when he was running routes at at least 90% after practice, when a rookie would probably be expected to be out there. You have to draw the line when someone is completely is in the wrong ... otherwise, what's the point in even having a coach? Why not just let the players police and coach themselves ... heaven forbid you hurt one of their feelings.

Just because you throw a label on someone doesn't mean it's the truth. The truth in this situation is that Jason Taylor has decided to put dancing on a TV show ahead of getting ready for the upcoming season. That's completely undebatable. The proof is in the pudding.

Taylor's actions are indefensible, and only the most notorious Parcells bashers are defending it ... because they don't care about Taylor, they simply hate Parcells.

Fair enough. I don't give a rat's toot about Parcells so it doen't matter to me either way.

As someone else already mentioned, if it was Sparano that had the problem no one would care. Taylor will lose tonight, go back to Miami, play a great season, and walk away with Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.

How did Mike Strahan's decision last offeseason to skip voluntary, mandatory and training camp affect his season.......ohh he had 9 sacks and helped the giants to the super bowl and was still the emotional leader of the defense.

Emmitt Smith 93 season- missed training camp and 2 regular season games......How did that work out once he signed his contract......super bowl.

There are different rules for different players and the fat tuna is barking up the wrong tree. The dolphins sucking has zero to do with taylor. The guy gives it his all and that fat tuna wants to come in and pretend to be some 4 star general. How did he lead our troops his final season. Looked more like he was leading the titanic. And dont give me this garbage about if Romo didn't bobble the snap we would've won. I say if we would've attacked a wounded seattle secondary it wouldn't have come down to a bobbled snap. Parcells has gotten by far to long on reputation and not results. I'm happy he's out of here.
