Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith practiced in pads and without a knee brace for the first time Wednesday since he was selected 34th overall in the 2016 draft, according to The MMQB's Peter King.

Smith, who suffered a torn ACL and LCL as well as nerve damage in the 2016 Fiesta Bowl, didn't take a snap last season.

"We knew Jaylon’s situation, the first year was going to amount to a redshirt year," Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said, per ProFootballTalk's Charean Williams. "We had no expectation he’d be able to play, but he’s on schedule. We’re excited to see him come back."

Williams added that Smith will practice every other day at training camp as he continues to work his way back toward 100 percent in anticipation of a 2017 debut.

The Cowboys appear to have a set group of starting linebackers in Sean Lee, Anthony Hitchens and Damien Wilson, but Smith should offer reinforcements as a run-stuffing specialist who largely plays a two-down role provided he can stay healthy.

For now, though, the focus will be on slowly but steadily bringing the Notre Dame product along so he's ready to go in time for Week 1.

OK that is the first report I have seen that flat out says he was NOT wearing a brace. Now being its BR and them talking about a knee brace....

They're bringing Jaylon along slowly. as evidenced by the fact he'll be limited to playing only 2 downs rather than three. Baby steps! He'll also be limited to playing every other day to minimize the chances for suffering a setback. It figures -- he's rightfully considered a valuable commodity. ;)

Probably more to the point about how long its been since he was in any way in pads and doing football drills that has them cautious.

Slow and steady progress is the right prescription for him. I expect him to have a long and fruitful career, so we can be patent as he takes on gradually more of a load.

It's the best way to ensure his ongoing health, assuming that's in the cards, of course. Let's all hope his development goes well. I'm keeping my expectations at a moderate level, in hopes of him staying healthy and reasonably productive in a 2-down role. I'm trusting that the staff will know when it's time to step up his activity.

So maybe my expectations of him being a pro-bowler are too high, after all... Super Bowlers don't play in the Pro Bowl any more. :D

No harm in hoping he gets there, as far as I can see, although it's more than likely to require considerable time for that to come to fruition. Maybe it'd be more practical to hope for it in about the next year or two? Considering how far he & the team must come to do so, that's not too bad. ;)

The progression of Jaylon had overshadowed every other item of interest in my mind. I'm trying to focus on things like WR battles, secondary battles, DLineman improvements etc etc but my eyes keep getting transfixed on that beast out there wearing #54.

Looked pretty crisp in the videos that were posted today. Much better than the infamous "limp" video from the other day.

I think it's understandable that there'll be times when a less than 100% condition is detectable. Serious injuries are prone to take plenty of time to reach a stage when no limitations at all are to be seen. It seems to me that they're quite subtle in nature at worst. I'm optimistic that his condition will improve if handled respectfully of the serious nature of his injury. I've had some serious injuries to my legs that required even more time to become undetectable. Careful handling is essential right now and may be for some time yet to come.

54 looked solid out there. May I ask if you're referring to his afo? Or knee brace? Bc we knew his knee is at 100% and doesn't need a brace. Now the drop foot is another thing...
