The Dallas Cowboys are hoping Jonathan Cooper can finally live up to his potential after reportedly signing the guard to a one-year deal, per Adam Schefter and Todd Archer of ESPN.
Jon Machota of the Dallas News later confirmed the news.
Dallas added the guard for depth at the end of last season and will hope he can make a positive impact in 2017.
Cooper was the seventh overall pick in the 2013 draft by the Arizona Cardinals but he struggled to see the field in his two years with the team. He made 11 total starts in 24 games.
He was traded to the New England Patriots for Chandler Jones but was waived before making an appearance. The North Carolina product then made three starts for the Cleveland Browns but was once again waived before the year ended.
He ended his season with the Cowboys but wasn't needed behind an elite offensive line. This time, he could compete for a starting spot as a replacement for Ronald Leary, who signed with the Denver Broncos earlier this offseason.
On the other hand, La'el Collins should have a strong chance of earning the starting guard spot if he is fully healthy.
With Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick and Zack Martin all earning first-team All-Pro honors this past season, Dallas will likely once again have one of the top offensive lines in the NFL next year regardless of who else plays. Still, adding Cooper will provide even more depth for what should remain a dangerous offense in 2017.
