Brad Johnson anyone?

I agree the protection wasn't good and the runnng game was bad, but his WRs dropped too many passes.

That whole offense seemed a mess and that is funny since Childress was supposed to be an offensive genius. Now his defensive coordinator is in charge in Pittsburgh.

Childress is an imbecile from what I can see.

Johnson has a solid track record before him. One bad year shouldn't erase that.

Brad can barely throw the ball 30 yards, No to BJ!

It looks like the Vikings will release him. I think he fits the backup-QB-with-experience profile fairly well and can play in a pinch.

Go Cowboys~

Clearly another option and in my opinion the best option.

Why would Romo need a vet qb to be a mentor to him? We just signed Wade Wilson......oh nevermind :D

Not looking for a mentor I'm hoping we can get a guy who can step in with limited practice time and get the job done.

Brad Johnson is who I call Drew Bledsoe the 3rd. Jake Plummer is the 2nd.

I like Brad Johnson alot as a back up. Someone who can step in and also who knows his role. He would be a goot mentor for Romo as well. I'm all for it. I'd rather have him than Kerry Collins or Jake the mistake Plummer

I agree, I'll take Brad for several reasons, but Jake was 39-14 in Reg. season games for Denver, so a person would be hard pressed to say the guy can't win games. He was 1-3 in PO games but they lost to Indy twice and the SB champ Steelers, so they did lose to good teams. He's a mistake prone guy, but he can get hot for decent periods of time, and when he does he's tough. IMHO, if the guy were willing to backup, he's the kind that could come in week 10 and reel off 5-6 wins if he gets hot. Still, i think it's a long shot and i'll take Johnson because he'd help Romo, come cheap, and he'd be happy as a backup. The thing i'd worry about with Jake is the "over the shoulder" factor with a young QB like Romo. Last thing we need is a Jake chant if Romo loses a couple.

And any of those guys I would take as a backup.

B. Johnson is the guy I'm hoping we get as our back-up QB.

Several reasons,

1. I think he would understand his role and not have a "J George" attitude.

2. Johnson has won in the league as a starter (back in the day :)) and has had his share of ups and downs playing in the NFL. He would be a great sounding board for Romo.

3. Johnson would also be a solid sounding board for our 3rd QB (whoever we choose to develop).

4. I think Johnson is still capable of winning a couple of games for us, if necessary (used in a spot role, not as a full season starter).

Ideally, I'd like to sign Johnson and also have a developmental type QB to groom as our 3rd stringer.

Plummer would be a disaster as a backup and he's not that great as a starter.

I don't agree. While Jake has not been a great starter he has had some very good games. Like many former starting QB who have not had great success it has been consistency that they have lacked in their game. As a backup you looking for a guy who can enter a game in a pinch and possibly take over for the short term and I think a guy like Plummer may be better suited for that than being a starting QB

Not following you on this...Plummer's game is nothing like Drew or Brad's.

I think Brad Johnson would be a great backup candidate. I wouldn't hold last season against him.

I agree with Alexander that Childress is a bonehead who did more harm than good in Minnesota.

And Johnson's "receivers" couldn't catch a cold half the time.

And for a guy who can't throw the ball 30 yards, he sure had a few nice passes in our preseason matchup last season.

As far as backups go, you could do a lot worse.

It seems some folks have their expectations set a bit high regarding a backup.

His ego won't let him be a backup.

In Dallas, Johnson wouldn't be pressured any less, or have any more of a consistent running game than he had with the Vikes. Johnson was pressured once every 3.5 pass plays, Romo was pressured once every 4.5 pass plays. Factor in Romo's mobility, and Minny's line didn't do any worse of a job of protecting the QB than ours did.

The Vikings averaged 4.1 yards per rush, same as Dallas (whose running game was also inconsistent).

But you can't compare our top 3 WR's (Owens, Glenn, Crayton) with what Johnson had last year in Travis Taylor, Troy Williamson, and Billy McMullen. That's why I said the Bledsoe comparison was valid, but only up to the point that Bledsoe actually had people to throw to.

I found this Brad Johnson quote: "It's better to be prepared and not have an opportunity, than to have an opportunity and not be prepared."

Could there be a more perfect backup?

Unless Houston makes a move and gives him a chance at the starting position he may not have many choices. I'm not a Plummer fan and I agree he is not a guy I would want as a starter but the truth of the matter is every candidate out there that would come in as a backup will have his share of warts even Brad Johnson who I would take over the rest.

Brad Johnson would be a good backup.

He has already won his SB... so he wont be hungup on starting. He would know his role and could win a few games if he had to...

How about Wade Wilson as a backup? Aren't they both around the same age?
