Brad Johnson: Is He Capable To Help The Cowboys?
by DaveTroll

Brad Johnson has been a smart and capable quarterback throughout the years. He came into the league and was a backup for so many years in Minnesota. He had his good years in Washington, Tampa Bay, and back to Minnesota.

With the Cowboys being set as Tony Romo being the starter. Is Johnson a capable back up? I have known Brad to be a dink and dunk passer. Does he still have the arm to stretch the field?

I am concerned about him coming in. Will we have to change the way the game is played? He may have the smarts, but can he move the ball down the field? He is going into his 18th year in the league. I don't think he is a capable backup, he should retire and move on.

Who would that leave for us? Second year Richard Bartel. There is improvement, but I don't think that is an option. He has potential, but I think the Cowboys need to go with another younger veteran.

Who's available? Chris Simms is unhappy in Tampa Bay and looking for a trade or release. Culpepper is still out there and Byron Leftwich is too.

I would just prefer someone a little younger.

He has major stock in Icy Hot, Centrum Silver, Ensure and Depends. He will be just fine.

I have no confidence in him as our backup. I don't think he even has the arm strength to be a dink and dunk passer.

Many may disagree, but if Simms is available, he should be our top priority for what's left of this offseason.

I said the same thing yesterday in another thread and was not received well at all. Johnson I think could come in to finish a game but if another team had a week to game plan against him I think it would be ugly.

I would tend to disagree here mainly because Romo does not play on every NFL team.

I would hope that Dallas does look to upgrade at backup QB

If Johnson had to come in for a few games yes he could handle the job if Romo were to go down for the season then like many teams the Cowboys would be in trouble.

I am not happy or sadden by Brad Johnson as the backup QB. He hasn't given me reason to not have faith in him because he hasn't played very much if any here at Dallas. I prefer to see results before making a decision to complain on the topic. His age or physical abilities might be a problem but it wasn't like we signed him he was 30 and aged over the year to 39. This is his second year with the cowboys and I hope the staff felt he was a capable backup when they signed him last season. Most teams have a huge drop off from their starting QB. If Tony were to go down, I wouldn't say the season would be lost, just a huge uphill battle with obstacles along the way. Hopefully Bartel or someone else can show some skill and be a better backup. Time will tell and I will worry about it when the time comes. For right now Tony is still around.

I'm no less comfortable with Brad Johnson as the backup as I was with Bernie Kosar back in the 90s.

The best thing about Johnson right now is that he is completely comfortable being the backup. He knows his role. He is mentoring Romo in how to prepare and not stirring up any controversy by thinking he should be starting.

Leftwich and Culpeper may have some physical upgrades, but definitely not a mental upgrade. Do any of you think they are going to put in the proper preparation if they are brought in as the backup? I would seriously question if they ever did that as starters. Also, they were cut by the Dolphins and the Falcons. That should tell you something.

As for Simms, he may be a good fit, but I'm not sure about his physical concerns after the injury or what TB is wanting in return. I also don't know how comfortable he is with being the backup and having no chance of starting unless Romo gets hurt.

I agree that the team should always be looking to upgrade every position. Just because you want to do that doesn't always mean that upgrade is available. I think Dallas could do MUCH worse than having Brad Johnson as the backup QB and don't disagree that they could do MUCH better. But there is more to the equation than just being younger or having a more popular name.

Don't want Leftwich at all. Have any of you really watched this guy play? Heck his last team brought him in to be their starter. Heck within a few games, he was benched. The reality is he's got a horribly long release and if that could be corrected maybe he could be useful. But you gotta think if it was correctable he along with his 2 former teams would have gotten it done.

Agree that I'm doubtful either of them would put in the time needed as a backup QB since they no there's no way either will ever start for Dallas unless Romo gets hurt. As for Sims, there still might be health concerns. I'd also be worried he will need a lot of snaps every week to improve/step in & no way I want cut back on Romo's snaps. Romo's our future & it necessary to move his development along just as quickly as possible. Carrying Simms as a #3 backup might make more sense cause there's less urgency to his development; he can get plenty of time on the scouting team to eventually move up to #2.

BTW: Can't figure out why the Packers used a draft pick (can't remember QB's name). Understand they might be concerned whether Rogers can stay healthy and do the job. But how does it help Rogers' development if he gets less snaps cause he's got to share with his backup. Maybe Packers FO have serious concerns that Rogers isn't the answer. Hmm.
