I sit here watching the Monday night game between the Vikings and Skins and it suddenly strikes me how much different Brad Johnson is as a QB compared to Drew Bledsoe.
Arm strenght? No comparison. Drew has the stronger arm. But I have seen Johnson throw a couple long passes tonight that didn't have Bledsoe's velocity but were relatively accurate... which brings me to...
Accuracy. I was surprised by the graphic that Johnson holds the record for the most consecutive seasons of at least a 60% completion percentage or higher. Watching the guy it's apparent why this is so. He does a terrific job of putting the ball where it needs to be. Accuracy has never been a Bledsoe strength-- and that was before the debacle this past Sunday.
Touch-- honestly I think this is Johnson's big strength he "knows" how much to put on a pass which seems to makes his balls much more catchable thus driving up that completion percentage. Bledsoe's touch on short passes is in my opinion just awful.
Mechanics-- Watching Johnson setup and release the ball you wouldn't think the guy was 36. He still moves pretty well and releases the ball quickly.
Movement within the pocket. Brad Johnson doesn't have "happy feet". He moved smoothly left and right to avoid pressure. Bledsoe moving smoothly? I've yet to see it.
All in all I wonder if we signed the best free-agent QB during the winter of '05.
