Bradie James: Entitlement has killed the Cowboys

Well i hate JFE and Bradie James ... maybe they can go find a lesser sense of self elsewhere... If jfe blew up (spontaneous combustion)..I would be sooo happy.

These types of things get a little bit overwrought. Entitlement is only a serious problem if it's actually causing you to work less. The NFL is so structured and these guys are incentivized by compensation so much. I'm pretty skeptical of this.

The truth is that our players and coaches just haven't been as good as advertised. If "entitlement" plays a role, it's a small one.

Still, it's not a bad attitude to have, as long as you're not writing things off to "entitlement in the past, but we've fixed that now!" Focus on the things you're doing poorly and do them better, and keep doing the things you do well.

What has killed the Cowboys? If by killed, you mean a fatal weakness that destroyed an otherwise Super Bowl contender, the answer is not entitlement.

2006: Romo the holder
2007: Gutless defense
2008: Poor OL play
2009: Poor OL play
2010: Gutless defense & poor OL play (pre-JG)

Maybe Alan Ball felt entitled not to play well at safety. Probably Davis and Columbo felt entitled to their starting positions. Let's not over think this. Despite the hype they always get, the Cowboys just have not walked the walk, especially in 2008.

If Bradie & co feel that one measly playoff win in 16 seasons gets the guys feeling entitled, there is no hope for this team.

2005 Jerry Jones GM
2006 Jerry Jones GM
2007 Jerry Jones GM
2008 Jerry Jones GM
2009 Jerry Jones GM
2010 Jerry Jones GM

the problem is the same same problem it's been since Jerry Thought anyone can coach the cowboys and thought he knew more about football than Jimmy and sent him packing, we've seen the results.

It's only some players and some coaches that aren't living up to the hype.

We have a talented group of guys, but they're not a talented team just yet. They still don't quite play as a team. That falls on coaching. Showing guys what their assignments are and how to execute them in most given situations.

I've been saying this for a while now. It seems that everyone on this team has a tv and/or radio show, I mean second teamers have shows and that's rediculous.

In most cities you have to actually do something first and then the shows and endorsements roll in but not here all you have to do is be a Cowboy and the same happens.

I guess it goes with the territory of being the most popular sports franchise in America but it's not good if you want a hungry football team.

I bet if someone looked it up they would find that the Cowboys organization and people associated with the organization have more shows that any other team and it's not even close.

I mean just look at the stars from our 90s team Irvin (NFLN), Aikman (Fox lead color analyst), Emmitt (ex-ESPN), Moose (Fox), and Deion (NFLN). No other team show up on tv like this, not the Steelers, NE, GB, SF or Buffalo.

It kinda reminds me of the reputation that the Longhorns have, country club atmosphere. It doesn't not lend to a blue collar, hard working, enviroment. Which is why they haven't performed well in the NFL. The Longhorn players are beloved in Austin and for that fact a lot of them live there after they complete school and live off the fact that they are ex-Longhorns.

As good a coach as Jimmy was, he also had the luxury of no salary cap. He didn't do a hell of a lot during his tenure in Miami.

Garrett is a good coach.

No, realizing it is when you actually play harder. Until then, it's just more noise. It sound a lot like the noise I've heard every other year, "this year is going to be different, we're more focused, blah, blah, blah."

Prove it on the field or STHU.

You're basically using the same argument that people use when they knock Emmitt's achievements, saying it was largely because of his offensive line. You realize that, don't you?

Give me a break,

What is mind boggling to me is that any professional athlete, a grown man playing a man's game believes other teams are going to give in to a mystique for something that hasn't happened here in over 13 years... a CHAMPIONSHIP!! Thanks JG for bridging the franchises rich history, and shame on Jerry for not alowing this from the very beginning! 3 SB Championships or not!!

I think the entitlement kills us,” James told FOXSports.com’s Jen Floyd Engel. “Our alumni, our former greats have made us America’s Team and we reap benefits that we haven’t earned — all the way around, as individuals, as a team. Those guys earned it. We just think we deserve it.”

Gee, that's swell.

No. I'm basically saying that it's not ALL Jerry's fault. There were many factors that led to this team not producing championships; or even playoff wins for that matter.

Entitlements are killing this country....oh wait.

That's a great article by JFE and Brady is right on point. I'm not sure how much Cowboys "players" have felt they deserved a titel just forbeing Cowboys, but some fans do feed it at times.
I do think Garrett has that "earn your way" mentality and his direct contact with the players and the way he handles the press and fans should make that clear. I'm looking forward to seeing where we are in the next few years.

I know some people don't like "agree" posts but this couldn't have been said any better and I'll try to add something. I think I saw where we led the league in attendance last year which is surprising without Romo and a mediocre team. I do see where the hype, both good and bad that surrounds the team could have an effect on young players.

Thanks for the kind words.

Idiots like ESPN trying to say that Dallas is not 'America's Team' ignore the facts. Since 1999 we've been #1 or #2 in the most popular team in the NFL...outside of 1 seasons where we were ranked #4, according to the Harris Interactive poll. We have been ranked #1 for the last 4 seasons

SOURCE: http://www.harrisinteractive.com/Ne...m Default/mid/1508/ArticleId/582/Default.aspx

Plus, I believe the Cowboys have the longest streak of sold out combined home AND road games. Meaning...the fans are everywhere. And that the fans are everywhere and they are that way every season...unlike Eagles, Saints, Colts, and Bucs fans whom rise in popularity when they are doing well but disappear when they are not doing that great.

Totally agree with this. If anything, the popularity of the team probably leads to the players getting a little overrated. But I don't see where it leads to the team not playing as hard, working as hard, etc.

But even if that's so, a lot of this is out of the coach's hands. Parcells was fanatical about not letting the team get full of itself, but he couldn't slow down the media attention and all the adulation the players get around town.

Bradie James: "“I think the entitlement kills us,” James told FOXSports.com’s Jen Floyd Engel. “Our alumni, our former greats have made us America’s Team and we reap benefits that we haven’t earned — all the way around, as individuals, as a team. Those guys earned it. We just think we deserve it.”

So it's really not the entertainment that kills them, as James says, but really how the players (i.e. "We just think we deserve it") improperly handle the hype.

The solution is not to scale back the entertainment, obviously. The solution is to draft the kind of players who are grounded enough to handle such hype and have strong coaching to mentor them properly.

That's why I like Garrett as a leader, and when he talks about "drafting the right kind of players". As those players become veterans they can serve as good mentors to the future rookies as well.
