Bradie James: Entitlement has killed the Cowboys

His expectations were so high that he recently admitted to thinking he’d have at least two Super Bowl rings by this time in his career.

So why hasn’t that happened?

“I think the entitlement kills us,” James told FOXSports.com’s Jen Floyd Engel. “Our alumni, our former greats have made us America’s Team and we reap benefits that we haven’t earned — all the way around, as individuals, as a team. Those guys earned it. We just think we deserve it.”

This is something I've thought the teams have been afflicted with and been a contributing factor to their failures, it's interesting to hear someone come out and say it.

People say he's overated? Guy is about as underated as they come. Just solid and dependable every year. No matter the scheme or coordinators he gets it done.

This is 1 of the 2 big things that I feel a HC of this team has to combat and moreso if they are coaching elsewhere. Regardless of what ESPN and dolts like Peter King try to pull, Dallas is America's team. Harris Interactive polls prove that without a shadow of a doubt.

With that popularity, there is a lot of hype and as it was put here...a sense of entitlement. I think Parcells worked to stop that, but I think he thought that stuff would go away after 2 years. Well, it didn't. And Parcells didn't have the mental stamina to constantly, week after week, year after year to not allow this sense of entitlement to happen.

Wade, didn't think it was that big of a deal.

Hopefully Garrett doesn't make the same mistakes.

I'll miss him as much as I miss both of the R. Williams - other players that many here at the Ranch overrated - vastly.

He's solid and nothing more. Not bad, but not terrible, and I'm not sure I've ever seen an opposing QB call out a player like Kitna did James.

As a leader? Please. Again, many overrate him in that department as well. He was here for six season and the second Brooking stepped into Valley Ranch, he was more of a leader than James had ever been.

Look, he may be a nice guy, and by all accounts he seems to be, but that doesn't make him a great or above-average LB.

That said, he's SPOT ON in his assessment of this team's mindset over the last 7-8 years.

I know some people don't like "agree" posts but this couldn't have been said any better and I'll try to add something. I think I saw where we led the league in attendance last year which is surprising without Romo and a mediocre team. I do see where the hype, both good and bad that surrounds the team could have an effect on young players.

Nonsense. He's a solid pro. Above average in the run and below average against the pass. He's a solid role player. Having said that I would love to have a Sam that could cover better. Hard to do in the 3-4.

What has killed the Cowboys? If by killed, you mean a fatal weakness that destroyed an otherwise Super Bowl contender, the answer is not entitlement.

2006: Romo the holder
2007: Gutless defense
2008: Poor OL play
2009: Poor OL play
2010: Gutless defense & poor OL play (pre-JG)

Maybe Alan Ball felt entitled not to play well at safety. Probably Davis and Columbo felt entitled to their starting positions. Let's not over think this. Despite the hype they always get, the Cowboys just have not walked the walk, especially in 2008.

If Bradie & co feel that one measly playoff win in 16 seasons gets the guys feeling entitled, there is no hope for this team.

I don't think that's what he meant. He was probably referring to the fact that a lot of players come to the team starry-eyed because of the hype through the years. Even when they are playing poorly, they are splashed all over the media. They can't help but have a feeling that they're special. That being said, overcoming the hype (as well as embracing it) is part of being a Dallas Cowboy. Winning is also part of being a Dallas Cowboy. Quite frankly, a lot of our players haven't learned how to be Dallas Cowboys yet. If anybody can instill that in them, it's Jason Garrett.
