Report: Clemson G Brandon Thomas Suffers A Torn ACL
Jonathan Comeaux April 7, 2014
NFL Draft Rumors Comments

Adam Caplan of ESPN reports that Clemson G Brandon Thomas has suffered a torn ACL injury while working out last week.

  • Caplan notes that Thomas has lined up “at least 6 pre-draft visits so far.”
Thomas has been leaping up draft boards since his strong Senior Bowl performance a few months ago.

In addition to his Senior Bowl outing, Thomas ranked in the top half of several categories at the NFL Combine. Thomas put up 35 bench reps of 225 pounds, ran a 40-yard dash time of 5.09, a 20-yard shuttle of 4.83 and had a 29 inch vertical jump.

Some evaluators believed Thomas could be in the discussion to come off the board in the late first and early second round of the draft, so this is clearly a horrible situation for Thomas.

His draft stock will obviously take a hit following a major knee injury, but he could prove to be a steal later in the draft for some team that’s willing to give him a year to recover much like the 49ers did last year with RB Marcus Lattimore and DE/OLB Tank Carradine.

Sad news, especially this late. He will be lucky if he gets drafted now and will undoubtedly have to take a redshirt season.

Perhaps there is a scenario where we take him with one of our 7ths, put him on PUP then possibly get him late in the season? That would be a quality pick day 3 in my opinion.

Hard to take a player before the 5th round who you know will likely not play in the season.

But sixth and seventh rounds for teams that have a stable enough OL and can afford to sit him a year and wait on his rehab will probably be the route.

Mannnn pet cat. On one hand, he can be had way later. On the other hand, he won't contribute immediately like I thought he would.

That is what they have done (Tank Carradine, Marcus Lattimore), makes perfect sense.

If Dalls took a risk selecting Leary, why not with this kid that has more potential? He could be something special! get him in the 7th!

Definitely would use one of our 7ths on him or even package a couple of those 7ths and move up some to get him.

I don't think he'll even fall to the 7th round.

If the Cowboys took him with a 5th round pick would anyone be upset?

He was shooting up boards and could have gone anywhere from 28-45 most likely. So no, I would not at all be upset if he was our 5th round pick. If you're going to take any position with an acl injury o line is probably the safest bet. Slap a heavy brace on the knee and he'll be fine by training camp next year.

Spencer Long is another case of a good o lineman who could be a steal because of acl tear. His was in October though so he could be ready by the beginning of this year. Pup list and miss 6 weeks at worst.

Dallas has a boat load of 7 rd draft picks, if he there selecting him and let him have a year to recover would be worth it
