Break the bank for Mario Williams?

Would you do it? probably will be the most sought after free agent.

If signing Williams means putting ourselves in cap hell I wouldn't do it. The Cowboys are several players away from being a serious contender so putting everything into one player would be a mistake. Williams is a good player but not a great player and wouldn't be worth breaking the bank to sign.

I'd absolutely break the bank for Williams. Unfortunately for us, a healthy Houston team may have hoisted the Lombardi trophy last week, I dont see him not resigning

All signs are pointing to them not signing him

I don't think the team should break the bank for any player not named Ware and he already got his money.

Mario William would be a great pickup, and worth a good contract. But the team has a lot of holes and I think they need to go for a mix of quality and quantity.

His injury was a torn bicep or something wasn't it?

For some reason I thought it was an ACL. It was actually a torn pectoral muscle. Ouch!

So that is some positive news if indeed JJ does break the bank for him.

The issue I think we're forgetting is that William's production has dropped essentially every year.

14 sacks in 2007, 12 sacks in 2008, 9 sacks in 2009, 8.5 sacks in 2010... he did have 5 sacks in 5 games in 2012 at the olb position.

Don't break the bank at all. Not for one guy.

That's a recipe for disaster. Teams that break the bank rarely reap the rewards they expected.

This isn't being critical of you, but isn't it the same as going all in for Nicks? He's going to be near the same cost.

Definitely the same thing, I agree. There's other guards out there that won't break the bank.

I'm warming up to this idea, especially seeing AdamJt13's post about how we will have 17+m to spend possibly on free agents.

Then go after cornerbacks in the draft high, Kirkpatrick(1st) or Gilmore, Johnson in the 2nd or 3rd respectively.
He and Ware would be one hell of a duo.

I hear this over and over again from fans and talking heads and it really isn't true. Easy to remember the larger deals that don't work out, but there's more that do every year.

I can't say I know for certain how good Williams is or projects at LOLB. After the Cowboys' personel dept throughly evaluates him, I'd have Ryan make the final call.

Signing Mario actually does make a lot of sense. The best way to mask a weak secondary is a legit pass rush, Ware and Mario coming off the edges would be pretty insane. We'd be able to play more cover 2 which should limit the big plays through the air while we let our DLine tee off and make plays.

Only thing is if we signed Mario it would make more sense to switch to the 4-3, which I don't know if we'd be open to such a radical change for one player.

Mario would be a massive improvement. We definintely need some imposing figures on defense. But if it puts us in cap hell, I just don't see how we can do it.

I don't see how that could happen, unless we pull a Larry Fitz rookie contract on Williams.

Next year the dead cap from Colombo, Gurode and Davis disappear.
So we should be ok signing a big FA like Williams

with all the TV money, there is a good chance starting in 2013 that the cap goes up $5-10 million per year for the next 4-5 years after that. So the key will be this years cap; and maybe 2013. Anyone we sign we can slough off a lot of cash in the first two years and start paying it starting in 2014 when we have $10-20 million more each year to spend with the number steadily going up.

I would go after him . Players like him do not come around often. he is a game changer on defense.

I think he would team up well with Ware or I think he is big enough to dominate as a 3/4 defensive end

I'd go after him if Ryan plans on running more 4-3 packages instead of 3-4 packages.

But, I think the Panthers will be the team to break the bank for this guy.

Why not? The Commanders seem to do it every year and they are still playing. I mean they suck, but they are able to keep signing big time free agents. We should be able to get at least two of them.

Plus we are cutting TNew finally so that should free up some money.

I think you just presented the argument for NOT building through free agency.

we have 17.5 in flexible dead cap money, 4 mill to dump newman. 4-5 between brady james and brooking. we can also get 8 mill by turning scandrick and ratts guarenteed mony into signing bonus money and the 1.5 mil from the cba. Not including if the cap goes up. ( numbers stolen from adamjjt :)) Next year we have no dead cap money so you could push dollars into the second year of the contracts. I understand the logic in we have to many holes to fill but a bunch of guys doesnt win superbowls, playmakers do. We may go to a 4-3, we play allot of that now. how about being able to switch defense without have to swap players and be equally effective. Mario brings that. On the other side of the ball, Nicks gives you a 6'5 330lbs strongside guard who is 26 a 2 time probowler while giving up 2 sacks last year. We have not had a strong side since larry allen was here. When you need a yard 9 out of 10 times you get it. we can afford 2 bigtime contracts and Jerry has said over and over he is spending all his cap money. We may be able to grab both and a 2nd tier corner and go into the draft without any glaring needs. To pull that off and land konz at center would make my day.

All true, Pross...and then there are the aircraft's lifetime characteristics beyond the nuts and bolts. Stress upon mainframe structure breaks up over time as well...so if one wishes to use the best pieces strength timeline, you need to make a dramatic move....NOW. Tony Romo and DeMarcus Ware won't hold onto the top of game form for ever. And the timeline on Jerry Jones' own credability is being pushed as well.

This very thing needs to happen right now.
