Breaking news: Roy Williams better play well this season

That's the thing that I tried to point out to Albert Breer with the comment I left to his first entry on the subject.

Albert,

One thing you didn't specifically say was exactly how many of those catches came against Roy Williams.

I know in many situations, the scheme had Roy man to man with the TE, especially if the TE was split out wide as the Giants did frequently with Shockey vs the Cowboys.

If I remember correctly, and I'll rewatch the game tonight, Shockey made only like 4 catches vs Roy and many of them for short gains.

The writeup you've posted makes it seem that all 12 catches came against Roy Williams. I'm not trying to say Roy was good in coverage last season, but it might be more accurate to discuss only the plays where Roy was covering Shockey.

All this proves is one thing:

Roy is a troublemaker.

The "Roy Williams is off the field in obvious passing situations" is a huge misconception.

AdamJT13 has been saying it for a while now that Roy was always on the field on 3rd downs. He was OFF the field on some 1st and 2nd downs when the defensive staff wanted to remain strong against the run by staying in our base 3-4 front but capable of matching up well with 3 and 4 WR sets.

No, I said he was ALMOST always on the field on third downs. There were some third downs when he was off the field.

Roy was out for 61 plays last season (including plays wiped out by penalties), not including the game he missed. I've been reviewing our games and keeping track of which defensive formation we were in on each play, and whether Roy was in the game or not. So far, I'm pretty sure I have identified 59 of the 61 plays Roy was out (I have a few more games left to watch). Of those 59 plays, 28 were first downs, 21 were second downs, nine were third downs, and one was a fourth down.

My fault on misquoting you.

These horribly biased media types should stop perpetuating all these Roy myths. Clearly, the only unbiased and balanced analysis of Roy Williams occurs on this board.:D

Repeat it, Timmy. Do it a couple times. And let it sink in.

I haven't covered the league forever, but I can tell you that this time of year, you see plenty of things within a team's personnel groupings, formations and playbooks that wind up on the cutting room floor. Experimenting, I think, is a simply enough word for Timmy Tabloid to understand. So I would guess mentioning the one sub package I remember Roy Williams being excluded from last season would be more significant than going in-depth on a grouping people saw at friggin' voluntary OTAs.

Of course, Timmy Tabloid did make a decent point earlier in saying the new-found wealth of cover men will likely change the club's substitution patterns, and take Roy off the field more often since Anthony Henry has some position flexibility. So you can take a bow on that one, T-Mac, if you'd like.
