Let's suppose that Josh Brent plugs in and plays at the same level that he was playing before the world collapsed on top of him. And let's assume that he is in football shape for the purposes of this exercise. How much impact can he have on this defense and the overall success of the team?

I'm not sure the level he was playing at is any higher than what we're currently getting from Nick Hayden.

Hopefully, he'll give us more than that in this scheme.

Brent will take some time to work back into form, he should be active soon but only get limited snaps as a backup. He will definitely help in short yardage situations though and IMO will help a lot as a 30 snap per game backup by the time the playoffs start. We need another 1 Tech in Marinelli's wave attack and Hayden is taking too many snaps as it is.

His impact would be to make players around him better. More double teams he commands means that Ro.McClain and other guys can rally to the running back or QB.

They said on Talkin Cowboys he was playing with the twos at practice so we may see him.

I hope so. I'm ready to see him play. This team needs an upgrade from Hayden. He simply played too many snaps sunday.

IF he was really back to his early 2012 form then he could make a significant difference. He would draw a double team because which Hayden often does not do.

Having said that, it's highly doubtful that he is back to that level this season.

Even if Brent doesn't command double teams he will hold the point of attack better than Hayden and get some penetration at times , provided he is not washed out.

The only drawback will be he can't hustle like Hayden in the lateral direction which may not be needed if he holds the line and let the LBs to flow.

I think the potential for Brent is his ability to beat double teams and also to spell Hayden a lot more. Giving Hayden the ability to perform to his potential.

I'd go for three 3-technique DTs and two 1-technique DTs.

I'd go with 4 defensive ends. Meaning a total of 9 defensive linemen, which we've done before. This is assuming McClain is healthy and the coaches believe in him. Otherwise itll just be 8.

Come on, too easy...he tries hard! Rudy? The C pushes him into the turf nearly every play. It gets old seeing him coming on the back end..

Exactly and it would isolate the RG to take on Melton and Crawford one on one more often.

Have you ever seen Hayden anchor a double team? Ever?

I've seen Hayden make more plays than I've ever seen Brent make ... and I'm all for replacing Hayden.

Now, Brent was operating out of a 3-4, so it's hard to compare from that standpoint, but he wasn't really much more of a small role player. Now, his fit might be much better in this 4-3, but I see no reason to harbor expectations that he'll even be better than Hayden.

Using "Brent" and "impact" in the same sentence makes me nervous.
