Brett Maher over Dan Bailey?

He missed multiple games and wasn't 100%.

Did people forget this? I mean, it's not like he mentally lost it - he had an actual injury. Why are people leaving out context to feel good about this bums signing?
What makes you think he's recovered from his injury and would stay injury free this year? He sucked in 2016 too for the exact same reason.

I mentioned earlier, Bailey had missed 5 (you heard that right, 5) FGs in his last 4 games...and his most recent attempt was a miss from 23 yards.
Bailey had a great run, but something was off.
He also tried out for the Jets recently but didn't get an offer.

Btw, that was no chip shot...but a very tough FG attempt. The stroke looked good...just missed by inches from 47 in bad weather, and had enough leg for another 10 yards easily.

....yeah, he was injured. Sheesh.

Of all the concerns I have about the Cowboys ability to score, hitting the upright on a 47 yard FG in the rain is way down the list.

Yeah that Maher guy is something special, SO glad we ditched my favourite Cowboys kicker of all-time for him.

He "sucked" in 2016? Again STOP EXAGGERATING to make yourself feel better about who we signed.

He had 84.4% of his kicks made in 2016 - that's not perfect, or great, but it's not "sucked". You folks have got to stop with the nonsense. Think and then post.

And look, I'm not even saying Bailey would have came back in form. What I am saying is that we let go of one of the NFLs greatest kickers for some CFL bum...

You at least give Bailey some season games before you move on. I have a bigger problem with who we replaced him with.

Maher was pretty much handed the job, there was no real competition since Bailey didn't even have a chance to fight for his job in the preseason. I doubt Maher himself even knew that he had a chance to make the roster so you have to take his preseason performance with a grain of salt since there wasn't any real pressure. He was probably thinking "Okay, I have no chance of making the roster anyway since the Cowboys have Bailey so I'll just go out there and do whatever I can do..."

Back in 2011, Bailey earned the job by beating out the other kickers in camp/preseason since the spot was up for grabs.

Agree. I won't pretend to know how he'll do going forward, but to go bonkers off of one kick (his first), isn't something I will do. As you stated, he had enough distance for at least 10 more yards on that kick. So the upside is, we have a kicker with a big leg. That could come in mighty handy at times (if our Offense can score enough to make games at least close). If that miss got to him mentally, we'll find out real soon. As for me, I'll give him a little slack before wanting him gone.

Using a sample size of 1, you'd have dumped Zeke after his first game.

I'm going by this guy being 28 already and sucking in the CFL and not making his first pressure kick in the NFL.

...but he kicks off nice like every kicker in the league now. So that's good.

I don’t mind the Bailey cut but do we have to keep goin young and cheap with special teams. Why not just sign a proven veteran kicker...

Just thinking outside the box here, aren't the goal posts way narrower in the Canadian Football League (like they are in arena football)? If that's the case, can you imagine how far right that kick would have been in the CFL?

If he had that much success in the CFL, I expect nothing less then hitting between the uprights every time... The only way I would give him an out is maybe distance...

With all the Dak and Garrett Bashing I don't want this clown to get a pass. First pressure kick as a Cowboy. He hit the upright flags, wide right. Whoever came up with the idea to cut Bailey needs to punched in the face.

Well, I think you could link Garrett to another failed decision already.

Well we can still get Bailey back. He didn’t get signed did he?

Maher needed to be perfect and hope Bailey got signed with another team and missed a few kicks. Otherwise he was doomed to get the Dak treatment.

Lol. Good post. It sucked he missed but it wouldn’t have won or lost the game.
