Bring back the timing offense – Can I get an AMEN?

I say we bring back the timing offense. Garrett played in it, played well in it, and knows how it runs. And what you need to run it effectively is a QB who can make all the throws with accuracy. Many teams run a west-coast offense – which is effectively a short-passing zone offense – because they do NOT have QBs who can make all the throws with accuracy. I believe Romo can make all the throws accurately, so running a zone-type offense with him would be a waste. Because the timing offense is far superior to any zone-oriented scheme, we should bring it back with Garrett running it and teaching it to Romo.

In addition, we need to abandon this gimmick 2-TE offense scheme – which also uses a zone-oriented mentality, by the way - and bring back the 2-back set, which happens to be the base set for the timing offense. We’ll also need a good FB to effectively run the timing offense. We should target a FB high in the draft to couple him with Barber; Polite can minimally serve as the backup FB and possibly compete with the rookie for the starting role. We’ll also have Thomson coming back at RB, who can easily grow into any role Julius Jones can play; that makes Jones expendable, and I wouldn’t mind trading him for a 3rd round draft pick that we can then use to draft along the OL (possibly Guard?). Ahhh, imagine the possibilities…

any schemed offense whether its timing, 2 TE, run and shoot, etc will succeed or fail not because of the scheme, but because of the execution of the players in that scheme.

I don't think Romo has the gun to run a timing offense.

Romo's arm is strong enough and with his quick release he would be able to run that offense.

The timing offense only works to perfection when you have a dominant offensive line. You have to be able to block to set up the routes unless you are throwing as soon as you get the snap. We have a Swiss Cheese offensive line- I think it would fail.

Yeah, our timing offense was a thing of beauty under Jack Reilly.

How about we use the offense that best fits this group, instead of attempting to use the offense that best fits Troy Aikman.

I agree so you address the OL which I think is something we will have to do no matter what offense we run.

Ernie Zampese should be available.

You also need disapline route running, remember Troy had no problem throwing a ball to a spot because he had faith that Mike or Jay would be there. That has been an issue with TO in the past, but maybe his good relationship with Tony will help that cause.

I saw a post above saying that we ran it (timing offense) here last year ? I hadn't heard that was the case, but I could be wrong.

The new offense orientated rules (or I should say new enforcement of the rules) could make the timing offense more viable these days, due to the fact recievers can't be bullied as much anymore after 5 yards.

Its also true that the line must maintian their blocks.

I have an offensive line question ? Has BP been running more of an zone blocking scheme since he has been here ? I thought I heard mention of that. Being an old O-linemen myself I can say I prefer the man blocking scheme, this might have been one of the reason for our poor performance (mabey?).

When Jason was here in the 90's we used a man blocking scheme, wouldn't it be cool if we went back to that and Jason brought in H. Houck to lead our line. I have not been too happy with Tony Saprano's line.
