Bringing back Hardy on a weekly, performance-based contract

Like most, I was all for cutting ties with Greg Hardy. It seemed to me like he was more of a distraction then anything else. But with both Lawrence and Gregory likely being suspended for the first 4 games, I think its time for the front office to consider bringing Hardy back on a performance based contract which pays his for each game he plays. The contact could be sweetened with bonuses triggered by performance such as sacks and QB pressures and tackles for loss. Maybe this could motivate him to perform on a weekly basis? Maybe not? But if it doesn't work we can release him at any point in the season. It gives us someone to fill the gap for the first 4 weeks while Gregory and Lawrence sit out their suspensions.

Will Hardy's ego allow him to play for such a contract? He would be betting on himself but by the looks of things he doesn't have very many options at this point. Neither do the Cowboys.

A few more failed drug tests and they might not have a choice.

Can't so this unless you sign him after Week 1.

Salaries are guaranteed for the season for the 53 in the opening day roster.

i don't think hardy is coming back regardless of what happens with suspensions or injuries that ship has fully sailed

Yeah, but you can outline a minimal salary, right? Everything else could be and should be tied to per game bonuses and incentives.

A lot of the recent contracts like those given to McClain and Dunbar are structured that way for the most part. A pay as you play arrangement.

You're likely right, but it's definitely something that would hurt this team, at least from an on-field talent perspective.

I don't care who the Cowboys have left to play on the defensive line, They can't bring him back. He's not worth it and I think it's safe to say that the players don't want him back either

They can make adjustments to work around the 1st 4 games. Still draft a DE in the 2nd or 3rd round anyway.
Move Crawford to the outside for 4 games. Scheme a little different, blitz more if possible to create pressure.
just treat it as if your 2 DE's got a sprained ankle or knee during the season. No need to change the entire draft or FA's around for this.

Drafting Elliott is still the best option, as a 3 headed monster rushing game and the passing game of Romo, Dez, Witten. Not to even mention the OL. Will control the ball and the clock to keep the defense off the field too.

And also meeting clauses, attitude clauses, and general disrespect.

That should cover it.

I have not heard a lot of players saying anything about Hardy. The club has not completely closed the door on this either. At this point, I think a decision is made after the draft is over and the team sees who might be available. He could still end up in Dallas.

I think it reeks of desperation to bring him back. I'd rather lose without him than lose with him, as I don't think he made enough of a contribution to even consider that he's going to win us any games.

Right, no need to panic or rush to sign him. Some vet DE's most likely will be released after the draft, June 1st, or even after the start of TC.
We only need to get through 4 weeks.

True. We made it through 4 games without him last year, and when he did return, he played great against NE, but all down hill after that, with a few sparks here and there.
We can survive 4 games missing 2 DE's this year, and a long way to go until those games.

Though I wouldn't be against bringing Hardy back, but we don't need to do it right now, nor maybe at all.

I think it reeks of desperation that we have drafted as many DLs as we have and we are faced with a situation in which we have to sign a pass rusher to begin with. To bring him back is just an extension of that. There is more to this then what we've been told IMO. He didn't have a bad year last season and there really is no reason to think that he would not be improved this season. This stuff about the locker room or missing meetings or whatever is BS IMO. Players do that crap all the time. This is about something else, we just haven't been told what that is IMO.

Has it come across anyone's mind that Hardy may have been involved with and partying with our two guys that are currently suspended for drug use. One of the issues with Hardy was his partying and showing up late. Maybe Hardy does not provide the kind of leadership they want in a veteran. Instead of discouraging the young players from being involved with drugs, may be he is right there doing drugs with them. Hardy claims his girlfriend was high on cocaine and alcohol when their altercation went down. Do you think the girlfriend parties using those type of drugs while the boyfriend stays clean. There is more to this Hardy story than what we know. Dallas kept him on the team after the photos came out so they really can't use that as an excuse and most teams will not kick a guy with high potential to the side for being late to practices and partying a little and if they do then there is always a team willing to sign him. I think Dallas sees Hardy as someone who is dangerous to have on their team and it really became apparent sometime after the season ended. Just my 2 cents and opinion.

It has, but I have no way of proving that or even giving that credible support because nobody has said as much. However, Gregory had this problem before he ever arrived in Dallas and DLaw's problem is not weed. It's amphetamines. That's a substance used to improve your performance, not to get high with. It's very unlikely that if DLaw was using, he started when Hardy got here. He has a four game suspension which means that he has tested dirty multiple times. Besides, Other players have also been suspeneded for usage and they predate Hardy. I think it's a little too convenient to say it's Hardy. This problem exists and has existed for a long time all over the NFL.

On talking Cowboys today they seemed to indicate that D.Laws test was not for recreational drugs it was for PEDs and might be related to him just trying to get back in shape after his back surgery. Does not seem to indicate him doing something like party drugs and the like. But who knows if that is true or not at this point but it seemed to be what they were hearing.

Also...Gregory had his problem long before he got on this team and met Hardy...so hard to blame Hardy on Gregory's problems.
