British man who wrestled shark fired from his job

LONDON (AP) - A 62-year-old British man who became an Internet sensation after wrestling with a shark on an Australian beach says he was fired after his employer discovered he'd been abroad while on sick leave.

Paul Marshallsea was filmed yanking a six-foot- (1.8-meter-) long shark away from waders at Caloundra beach near Brisbane in January.

But his intervention also caught the eye of his employer, the Pant and Dowlais Boys & Girls Club, a Welsh charity. Marshallsea had been on leave since April after saying he was suffering from work-related stress.

Basically: He used sick leave rather than PTO to go on a month long vacation.

Also, the story and the video do not match AT ALL. . The real story was a shark swims up close to shore that is sick and dying, and he walks over to it, grabs its tail and guides it back into the ocean. The shark swims away slowly . So while he did a good deed of directing the sick animal back into the ocean, he didn't rescue anyone lol. A lot of animals including sharks, dolphins and whales swim to shore when they are sickly.

Nothing if your in Canada I would guess but apparently, if you are Brit, then it's a definite no-no.

For what? you put in for sick leave, and you vacation to another country and start wrestling sharks? Thats called lying and seems to be (reading the article) against company policy...there is no wrongful dismissal..they broke company policy, and got fired for it. nothing wrong about it

It isn't lying. Stress leave can be for many things and sometimes a vacation is what is needed to get rid of the stress.

I believe many of you here are very literal and always want to punish or agree to some punishment without taking into account personal circumstances or nuance.

On leave for 11 months? And how does one suffer from work-related stress working for a charity? I'm guessing he was on some sort of paid leave and milking the system for every penny he could get.

I hear you can get 3 months off paid for a hangnail in Germany.

Then you take a vacation...you don't take a sick day for "work related stress" and then go to another country and wrestle sharks..

Love it. He's showing a typical Western European behaviour. I would have kicked him out too.
