Broadus called Linehan the new OC but he also gets referenced as the Playcalling coordinator...which is it?
That's exciting to hear, because the reality is that Dunbar was ignored the entire season even when he was healthy.
I'm very excited to see how we lean on the running backs this year. Whoever wins the 3rd spot should be a special player. That basically means it won't be Randle.
I like Dunbar as well.
Crime we didn't use him more last season.
Hes a weapon!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dare we say, Sproles-like?
Dunbar did have some big time mistakes early on and Garrett shied away.
I know some people do not see the fumbling as a significant issue (in preseason vs. Arizona and against KC), but it is reasonable to have that factor in given his limited touches. Plus he was always injured.
Those two things suggest the player is unreliable. You have to be available and reliable and seize the few opportunities you will have when you occupy that kind of slot on the totem pole. He seemed to do that against Oakland, then got hurt again.
All in all, it is clear Linehan wants the Reggie Bush role. It is there for Dunbar to take.
That would be a fair conclusion if it weren't for the fact that we were still losing games, and needed another dimension on offense. The fact is even before the 2nd fumble, he wasn't getting reps when he was healthy. Garrett has been historically risk averse since he has been in control of this offense.
Dunbar has a real opportunity to shine. This offense is like the sports car that has been sitting in your grandfathers garage untouched until someone handed you the keys after he passed away, Garrett is still here, but the keys are in Linehan's hands now.
First legitimate offensive coordinator we've had since Sean Payton. I would have counted Callahan, if we let him run his system. Last year was such a complete joke. It's silly how much Jerry will bend backwards for Garrett. Even the Linehan hire is bending backwards for him somewhat.
What we learned is that it is too late in the Romo era to switch to a new system, even if Romo is better suited for said system. The idea is to have Garrett stay here as long as Romo is here and after Romo is gone if there is some sort of success. As long as the offense is even somewhat successful, they'll want to keep the system the same for Romo and now Bryant.
Linehan will almost be impossible to fire now. My guess is Callahan walks next year, and we get away from all the silliness about titles and Linehan will be simply the OC.
Defense is another problem entirely. Marinelli will have all the time Garrett has to shape up this defense. When the time comes for Garrett to go, my guess is that we look to Seattle or former Chicago coaches to find a new head coach who can take over the defense mostly. I think they would have loved to get Lovie Smith, but we lost that option by keeping Garrett. We could have got Smith, and brought in Linehan to keep the offense intact, but what coach wants their offensive system dictated to them?

Dunbar is too small to have a full time role. But if used properly, he can have a big impact.
I agree about the risk adverse situation. All you have to do is see how he has failed to ever trust his offensive line, even when it was practically dominating opponents late last season.
Dunbar is hardly the missing piece if he is not reliable. Yes, he has the opportunity as I am pretty sure that is what Linehan wants. He wants several backs to complement what he wants to do. In my eyes, I do not see how Dunbar is any more proven than anyone on this roster. And he is coming off yet another injury.
Jones bent backwards and sideways for Garrett, but I think it is a bit silly to imply Callahan did not have a chance. I just think it was a bit of an odd switch in dynamic to begin with. Tell Callahan to do his thing, but have the QB indoctrinated fully into Garrett's way to have significant impact. The whole way the offensive playcalling thing has been handled has been a dumpster fire to begin with. Some of the pratfalls from having a trainee head coach.
Agreed here. Just not so sure we need it so dependent on him that we cannot play with another QB. I would scale back his involvement. I think that just gummed up the works last year and worked against perhaps what Callahan was trying to do, at least early, when he had some sort of mandate to control the offense. Romo has been around Garrett a long long time and likely would prefer things to be as he prefers.
Linehan will last as long as Garrett does. I do not think he can be scapegoated while Garrett emerges scot free. It was easier to paint Callahan as the foil than someone who Garrett basically was mentored by.
The whole staff is basically on a one year prove it deal. If things go south, Jones should and rightfully so, clear out the trash, take people to the woodshed, make people "uncomfortable" etc.

He just needs some luck, most injuries are a fluke.
Sounds like our issues are just that darn luck thing again.
I think he's better!
