OXNARD, Calif. – Here are some observations from the film room in Oxnard:
  • It appears that the front office reached out to former New York Jets guard Brandon Moore in an effort to try and bring him on board to start at the right guard spot on this club, but Moore elected to stay away from the field and retire from the game. My view of Moore wasn’t as positive as what this front office had at the time, but I don’t want to focus on that. I have said that all along and I believe it even more now, it’s about keeping Travis Frederick at center and not moving him to guard, but they also want to put the best five players on the field and if Frederick gives them that option, they would do it. I have observed Mackenzy Bernadeau these last two practices and I believe that he can handle this job. I like what I have seen from Ronald Leary and that gives me hope as well, but I honestly believe that keeping Frederick at center is in the best long term interest of this team. I have had my issues with Phil Costa but in this scheme he has a much better chance of succeeding, but I also feel like Frederick is a better player. As much as everyone thought that Moore was the right option, I didn’t feel that way. It’s been my experience that sometimes the moves you don’t make are the best ones.
  • There were some nice battles in practice Tuesday at some different positions. Jason Hatcher and Ronald Leary hooked up several times, with each player at times getting the better of the other. Hatcher continues to show quickness at the point which put Leary in some tough situations but, Leary was able to counter with power that put Hatcher on his heels. Doug Free and George Selvie went at it as well. Selvie was running with the first defense and was having his hands full with Free who continues to do a solid job with his technique both run and pass. Selvie’s best trait in camp has been his relentless way in which he has attacked the tackle as an up field rusher, but Free was up to the challenge. Selvie didn’t do much until he moved down inside over the guard in a special scheme. Sterling Moore had some nice battles with Dez Bryant and Dwayne Harris in the team period and later when the squad went into the two minute drills. It was a nice bounce-back day for Moore who I felt like didn’t play his best against the Dolphins.

Scout's Notebook: Difference In Garrett; Guard Watch

Thoughts from the practice field in Oxnard:

  • I have sat through the majority of Jason Garrett’s press conferences since he became head coach and I would have to say that this was the one that I enjoyed the most. I thought he was honest and at times even blunt about what I observed on film from the Dolphins game on Sunday.

Garrett has always been positive when accessing his team even to the point of I knew what the answer was going to be before the question was finished being asked. This afternoon was a different story all together. His tone and his message was very revealing in what he liked from his squad but there was also a message of what players, he expects more from in the coming weeks. In camp, it’s about learning things about your team, but today I learned something about the head coach and I liked what I heard.
  • A player that is in my sights this week from the point of evaluation, is guard, Mackenzy Bernadeau. As much as the front office will tell you that the left guard spot is open and there is a competition for the position, I believe it actually on the other side and can Bernadeau come back into the lineup and keep these coaches from having to put Travis Frederick in that role.

Phil Costa did a nice job at center on Sunday night and he would allow them to move Frederick if necessary but if Bernadeau can come in be solid in his protection but athletically move well enough in this zone scheme to handle the blocks, then Frederick stays at his best position in my view and that is center.

I agree with Broaddus.

I don't think the loss of Moore is that big of a big deal.

There a few more moves I wish hadn't been made too... Roy Williams (WR) for instance

Do you also agree with Broaddus that Bernadeau has been doing well and can handle the job? Because his non-worrying stance seems to be predicated on that fact. And the staff clearly doesn't agree with him, they think Bernadeau is not playing well at all.

How could you tell if the guy wasn't doing well after only 2 days of practice? o_O

You did hear about Garrett's comment at his PC, about Bernadeau's "rusty" play becoming an urgent situtation, didn't you? He is NOT doing well, the coaches are NOT happy with him, he IS going to get cut if he doesn't significantly improve.

I just wonder if JG actually said that or the reporter was just editorializing.

Doesnt sound like something JG would say.

This is what Garrett said...

By the way don't quit your day job to become an interpreter because you're not very good at it.

“He’s a little rusty, there’s no question about that,” coach Jason Garrett said. “The difficult thing with Mackenzy is he played a lot of football for us last year during the season – believe he played in all 16 games – but he missed the offseason leading up to last season, and he’s missed this offseason. So when you miss a lot of that time, that’s really when you can grow and develop. He’s still a young player. Has not started that many games. But injuries have bothered him since he’s been here. So he’s just getting back into the mix again."

That's all he said? I'm not able to hear the press conference. If so, that reporter should be fired. How the heck can that schmo decide for himself that Bernadeau's rustiness is becoming an "urgent" situation?! What a tool.

Fair enough.

Go over to the newsfeed zone. They've got Garrett's comments right there from the PC.

That's the first you've made sense all day. Too bad it's only very bad sarcasm.

Not at all. As I said, I was only going on the fact that Garrett had said the situation was "becoming urgent." Which he did NOT say, not even close. So no idea why that writer felt compelled to say that. After reading what he DID say, I'm more inclined to think that he may very well be slated to start. I was at the mercy of some foolish writer. It is not my fault.

But I do believe Moore was being brought in to be the starter or they were hoping he would play well enough to be the starter, at the very least. I don't think they were bringing him in with the intention that he was going to be the backup. They are clearly not satisfied with what's going on over there on the right.

At least we have a side to run to right now with Smith, Leary and Frederick. Last year there was no strong side to run to now looking at the left side of the line it is looking pretty solid. No doubt still need to get decent play from the RG spot but we are futher along now than last season
