Broaddus on player agents sticking it to Jerry and Stephen

Regardless the actual contract details, JJ and SJ are there own worst enemies. They are constantly discussing players and their contracts with the media. Quite literally, they negotiate with themselves.

I understand that in speaking to the press, JJ creates attention for the Cowboys and that is not always a bad thing... but, geez, stop the blathering

Watch from 17:40-22 minutes

jerry and stephen don't really care. there is a salary cap. we are 29th in dead cap. we are 16th in cash spent (mostly because of CD and Dak), and prior we were in the low 20s. we are closer to the cap floor than cap ceiling and we were 16th in void year money....what does this all mean? there is controls in place for spending and cash out. Jerry and Stephen don't mind, in fact love it. now who gets the money? does it matter to them? somewhat... they pay players that sell Jersey's because it has an ROI, given Cowboys are the only team that collect money for all the Jersey's they sell and its not part of the shared revenue. so agents sticking it to cowboys? of course for their players. usually top of the market players. and neither of the joneses care. they manage year to year.

they also don't like to pay for the same position twice...essentially never cutting or letting anyone go until the end of the contract so they don't have to replace the player and pay again, since they already paid a bunch of bonuses that counts against the cap. it doesn't matter the player, 90% of the time they are here to the end. perhaps some getting one year contracts. that's why we are so low in dead cap money. its inevitable, but its being managed by the joneses.

They market and sell the team year to year. I predicted middle of last season that given what had happened look for Jerry to have a semi-active off season to "generate hope", "show the fans". I said he will make one big name signing to make a splash. and like clock work. Jerry does that every time we have a down year. and brings fans back. then he just manages the roster and milks it. they rely on draft and when you have two bad drafts in a row, then we get 2024.

so this year he filled the roster. with low end FAs. resigned our own, since he likes to do that. and got one big name player. and just look at the excitement on this board. people are just soooooooooo giddy!.

I think Stephen's frustration isn't just because he isn't getting to negotiate, it's because he disagrees with Jerry's strategy. I think Stephen wants to get the deals done earlier, but is taking the heat along with Jerry, when it should be all on Jerry. But stephen isn't about to throw Dad under the bus.

That would frustrate me if I was in his place.

I'm in agreement with Broaddus on the agents sticking it to the Cowboys. The only way to break the cycle is to call their bluff and let a big-name player (or two) walk.
That won't have the effect you may think it will. The player will still receive a super large contract and Dallas would be weaker having traded a top player.

The only way for this to be changed is if the Cavemen change their ways. Get in front of their star player deals. A year ago, Micah would have taken $35MM to $37MM. That would have been below Garrett's current deal and what Watt will receive in 2025.

There’s no ‘collusion’. There’s just the fact that Big Enos gifted Little Enos a ‘job’ that he’s unqualified for. Fans might not want to hear it, but agents know that Stephen is bad at his job.

Look no further than this:

Dak Prescott and his agent sat and waited until day before the season started to sign a deal making him the highest paid player in the league.

Why?

First, because they got everything they wanted. Huge money, huge guarantees, another ‘bite at the apple’ in a few years.

Secondly, because the very next day, the risk of injury would have been on them. Had Dak had the same season and injury, where would his price range be now? We all know the answer.

No. The Cowboys gave up the farm and assumed all risks. And got burned.

The ‘Cave Men’ is unfortunately a perfectly accurate description.

And word is out league-wide.

I’m not saying what Broaddus is saying is wrong but we know the situation. If you want to obtain your free agents you have to overpay. If you don’t want to overpay then don’t. But you will just be overpaying for other teams free agents they didn’t want.

On what planet do you get Micah for cheap or a bargain?

I don't know that agents have to collude to get the best of Jerry. I think it is obvious that Jerry is not a great dealmaker.

And it is not just agents. I believe league GMs also know that when dealing with the Cowboys they can fleece them in trades.

No one should be surprised if this is the thinking of anyone around the NFL.

I would absolutely blow the lid off of this garbage the way the Cowboys keep getting blamed for not getting these deals done. Id remind everyone that Micah said he didnt need to be the highest paid non qb in the league, and then Id tell everyone, but yet he isnt signing the deal we have on the table because it doesnt make him the highest non qb in th eleague.

Players want to hold out, which is their version of playing hard ball. Id start playing hard ball and let them, then fine them for every day they arent in camp. We cant always bee the team with the highest paid players in the damn league.

its all up to players and agents. Are you telling me that the Chefs are awesome deal makers because they are getting mahomes for Brady like chump change? They are getting Mahomes for chump change ONLY because Mahomes is letting them have him for CHUMP CHANGE.

Mahomes could have a clause in his contract... hell, he could go to the Chiefs today and demand this clause be added into his contract that says he has to be paid 1 dollar more per season than the highest paid QB in the league and the Chiefs wouldnt even question it. They would agree and ask if hed like a nice ice tea to go with that.

Playing in Dallas warps these players views of themselves because they think that it is actually them that is the reason for so much attention in the world. If Micah played in Seattle, as Isiah Thomas once said about a certain white guy, hed be just another good player.

That’s a good point. Said he “didn’t need to be the highest paid” because that suited his narrative at the time, yet he isn’t signing what’s on the table…which Im sure is quite generous.

I have little doubt that when he does sign, he will be the highest non QB.

Similar to Dak, the agent knows there’s no way they are letting that player walk. They can still tag Parsons twice though, and while those figures aren’t cheap, they aren’t QB level….and they also can’t tag Pickens in that case. Tough to say who blinks first.

In small doses, BB is right. Most of the time, he's hot garbage that must be taken with several grains of salt. Be careful who you follow applies. Cavanaugh is just too smug for my taste. Thinks he's smarter than anyone else. The thing is, dude can't evaluate his way out of a wet paper bag, much less get it right on his player evaluations. Stopped listening to most everything they say long ago.
