Broncos deal 22nd overall pick to 49ers

I am telling you, the Niners will end up with the #1 pick. Bush will be reunited with his Helix High teammate. Makes too much sense. They'll give them #6, #22 and a 1st next year.

I have been lamenting this for months. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but it just seems to make sense.

they run the 3-4 and lost Julian Peterson, so many think they are targeting Lawson, Wimbley,or Carpenter. That is what the talk radio shows out here are saying. It could be a smokescreen though since the 49ers have so many holes to fill. It should make for an interesting draft.

I predict the SF/Denver trade will be posted here another 3 times today. This one is, what, the 3rd time today?

The 49ers aren't taking any chances with their second pick in the NFL draft.

San Francisco is looking to get a sure-fire starting prospect at a position of need at that slot, and the chances of that greatly improved Wednesday when the Niners traded with the Denver Broncos for the No. 22 overall pick in the draft, making San Francisco one of just two teams to own two selections in the first round come April 29.

But the price the 49ers paid for the premium pick was high. San Francisco relinquished the fifth pick in the second round — the No. 37 overall — and the fourth pick in the third round — the No. 68 overall — to move up in the draft.

The Niners apparently are angling to pick up one of the top outside linebackers in a linebacker-rich draft at the No. 22 slot with the assumption that Ohio State product A.J. Hawk — generally considered the top linebacker prospect available — will not last past the first five picks. The 49ers own the No. 6 overall selection in accordance with their 4-12 finish in 2005.

"We took advantage of a great opportunity to acquire a second first-round draft pick today after working out a trade with the Denver Broncos," Niners coach Mike Nolan said. "We feel like we acquired more value by making the trade for this pick. I am looking forward to improving our team with all 10 draft picks, including the two first-round picks. We will continue to build this team through the draft."

The trade contradicts the pattern Nolan's Niners have set of accumulating extra picks to add both talent and depth through the draft. Since last September, the 49ers had added four picks to their package of 2006 selections via trades.

But those extra picks allowed the Niners to make such a move for an additional first-rounder, where San Francisco will be looking to fill a void in its starting lineup.

The 49ers now have 10 picks overall at the end of this month. San Francisco also owns the 20th pick in the third round (No. 84 overall), along with one fourth-rounder (No. 100), one fifth-rounder (No. 140), two sixth-rounders (Nos. 175 and 192) and three seventh-rounders (Nos. 213, 236 and 254).

The Broncos now own seven picks in the first four rounds. They have the 15th overall selection after moving up from 29th in a deal with Atlanta. Denver had acquired the 22nd overall pick from Washington in a trade last April.

The Broncos also had been looking to trade up to acquire the Niners' No. 6 pick, where Denver was hoping to land Maryland tight end Vernon Davis. But the Broncos apparently didn't make a sweet enough deal for the 49ers to bite on that offer.

I hope you're right. We don't need anyone else competing for our 3 guys.

It has been reported that the Giants want Carpenter with their 25th pick, and that we could not trade down below the 24th pick or lose Carpenter. Now, with the Niners with the 22nd pick and are also wanting a LB this means we can't trade down below # 21 which is hardly worth the effort. If we trade with a team lower than # 24 and the Niners and Giants were to take LBs and if one of the big three were to be taken earlier, it would be counterproductive to trade because we would lose all of the big three unless we had another position targeted with our first rd pick.

Not sure I get this move, but then, not sure I really care since its the niners. What do they hope to gain by moveing up into the 1st? By giving up their 2nd and 3rd round picks, isn't this draft supposed to be deep in the lower rounds?
With such a bad team and with so many needs, don't they need more players? And what are they after that they couldn't get in the 2nd.WR? OLB? what?

Where ya been, Hos? It may not have been posted, but it's kinda common knowledge at this point.

Why was it common knowledge? I had no idea that SF was going to get Denver's pick at 22. Maybe I've been a little out of the loop, but this surprises me.

Just another reason why we shouldn't trade down... another team wanting OLB. If our guy is there at 18, we need to just do it.

My bad.

Find me the URL and I'll merge the threads.

Like I said, I don't think there's a thread on it. It's been discussed (or rather mentioned) a few times though.

I was just messing with you anyway. Your site, you post whatever the hell you want.

I meant this was major news early today, discussed and reported everywhere.

It is just as much your site as it is mine. In some ways more yours than mine.

I think the niners are looking for two starters in this draft.
Plus they stillcan deal down a bit out of the 6th slot come draft day.
If a QB is there for the taking someone will come a knocking to get that pick.
I do not see them dropping past the 10th slot though.
