Brooking - memory problems

Yesterday Keith Brooking was on ESPN Galloway & Co. show. Galloway on vacation (thankfully) with Ian Fitzsimmons and Matt Mosley Good show with Galloway gone.

The hosts were kidding around about the CBA and Brooking said, as if among friends ... man, my short-term memory has gone downhill the last few years. My wife asks me for something in the refrigerator and when I get there I forget what she asked for. (The hosts' joke was that - everyone would forget what their wife asked for by the time they got there ...)

So then Brooking says, not complaining, that ... hey guys, I'm serious. (Paraphrasing) _ It's not just this incident, but dude, my short-term memory has gone really bad the last few years (he says this with emotion like he's wondering what's going on .... ). Like it's really, scary bad.

It was so dramatic when I heard it yesterday, that I'm glad that Ben & Skin Show (ESPN) replayed this part of the interview on their show this morning.

John-Jacques Taylor had a funny line (on the replay) .. like if your house was 50,000 square feet like Brookings' house, you too would forget what your wife asked for when you had to take your elevator to the mezzanine down to the kitchen and it was a ten-minute walk down there.. (But listening to Brookings talk about it was creepy .. I felt bad for the guy ....)

Brooking in a cool way sounded really scared about it. I was scared too listening to the replay of the interview ..

Not very classy that the media kept joking about it. That's not something to take lightly.

Actually, joking about it may have been the most appropriate handling of the matter since it obviously came up unannounced.

Keith? Did you really want to come on the radio and discuss a possiblly serious medical condition while preparing to play another season of NFL football?

Then there is the fact that short term memory fade is a common occurrence for many while aging. You hear people joking about it all the time.

Having said all that, I sure hope Brooking is getting himself checked out.

He should retire now. I wouldnt trade my health for another year of playing if I were him.

Everybody's memory in their 30's isn't as good as it was in their 20's. That's called aging. Hard to know what's normal memory decline and what's due to concussions without some baseline testing...

I am living proof that you are correct. I used to remember everything, now not so much. Started when I hit my mid thirties.

Sounds like maybe he's had some concussions in the past. I hope he's OK.

We should cut him and let him come back to the ranch and play for free!
Maybe he will forget he doesn't have a pay anymore.... :D

Seriously that's normal with age to lose some short term memory.
To some limit for sure....

The hosts of the show mentioned the same thing to Brooking, as if to pardon him for the problem. 30s vs. 20s.

Brooking was like, man there's no way it's pure aging like five years. Something is wrong.

Feel bad for the guy. He's going to contact drills in training camp. Even if he's a little off in his head, he'll still be maybe a better player than what we have this season at ILB. If he can't remember the play he just called, his instincts will be better outcome than anybody we put in his place.

It's probably one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't moments. They made light of the situation, obviously not knowing the reality of the situation.

If they had dug deeper into the issue and made him look like a lesser man, Ben and Skin would've been skewered.

As someone who has been a reporter, there really isn't a good side to be on because no matter what, someone will always criticize what you do.

With that said, the appropriate response by the hosts would've been to move on ... if they could. But, that is something that is so profound and in the eyes of a lot of players ... and media members ... right now. They couldn't ignore it. Handle it differently? Perhaps.
