Malcolm Brown has announced his commitment to the Longhorns. This is a big get for Texas.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=5475462

"Malcolm committed to Texas," Tommy Brown, Malcolm's dad, told ESPN. "He committed tonight. It's over."

"I think the change of the style of offense was big," Jinks said (Brown's HC at Cibolo High). "Malcolm was excited by their commitment to run the ball and saw the opportunity there."

As many of you probably know, Brown is considered the top RB prospect in the Country by many scouting services. Brown is not a native Texan and so, allegiance to UT was not a given. Brown had strong ties to SEC football from his years spent in Mississippi. Alabama was a serious consideration for Brown because of the program and it's commitment to the run game. Brown was key to Texas making the switch from a Spread Offensive scheme to more of a Power I run oriented scheme.

What an ignorant comment to make.

James Wilder Jr., blue-chip spawn of the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers workhorse and owner of what must be the most impressive highlight reel in the entire 2011 recruiting class, politely requested the attention of recruitniks Wednesday for a humble announcement regarding the future destination of his coveted versatility and harem of toga-clad, grape-feeding groupies: He's going to Florida State. Seminole fans are granted permission to flip way the heck out, for a period not to exceed 60 seconds. (We are still talking about a high school senior here.)Georgia fans may be flipping out, too, though for a different reason after reports Tuesday that Wilder, Rivals' No. 3 overall prospect nationally and No. 1 running back, was planning to commit to the Bulldogs – an upset in itself, given the longstanding assumption that he'd be taking his 6-foot-2, 220-pound frame to Florida. Wilder should brace himself for Bulldog and Gator fans' vitriolic Facebook messages instead, unless/until he decommits from FSU in favor of one or both of the SEC schools at any point between now and signing day in February, in which case they plan to immediately absolve him of all sins while 'Nole fans start chucking the digital spears.

Top-ranked safety Karlos Williams committed back in February. Wilder could be considered the top linebacker or the top running back in next year's incoming class, though he reportedly wants to keep the ball in his hands; he projects as a punishing, destructive force of nature either way. Without a doubt, a coup for Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher.

I think the most likely scenario is the fact that Texas no longer has a prolific QB since McCoy left and sold out to the running game if they could nab this kid. If you can't throw the ball proficiently, run it down their throats.

Yeah, I think that is more believable scenario.

they no longer have a running QB, that's the reason for the switch.

I agree nyc. Texas has a good young QB but so much of their offense went through McCoy that it's pretty much impossible to duplicate the production they've had in the spread with Gilbert. Gilbert is more of a traditional passer so the offensive switch to a Power I is going to help him. You'll see a lot more 5 and 7 step drops with lots of play action out of Texas IMO. However, Texas did not have the Back necessary to make that offense successful until Brown signed. Brown is a Cowbell type back. Texas needed this player to make their offensive conversion work.

Wilder is interesting. The question for him will be what position he plays?

Wilder is supposedly taller than 6'2" now and I don't see him as a running back in college.

Malcolm Brown may have committed because of the change in offensive philosophy, but he's not the reason they are committing to a under center, downhill running game.

I think anybody who watches Texas Football knows this. However, without him, I don't think Texas is succesful in the switch. At least, this season. With Brown, I think they can be successful this year using a power running game.

Now the question is, will Aaron Green commit to Texas as well? If he does, Texas could be looking at a combination very similar to what they had with Charles and Taylor only better. Brown is more physical then Charles and Green is probably closer to Charles.

Get Green to finish this years rb recruiting and then follow that up by getting Gray in 2012 and you will have a colorful backfield. Brown, Gray, and Green. Seriously, if Texas does not get Green, look for them to get Gray in 2012.

I think they will go after Johnathan Gray regardless. They have Brown and are trying to land Green. Chances are decent that one of those guys will be gone by 2013. Texas will try to sign Gray no matter what if he continues to perform IMO.

Just a prediction but I think Gilbert at some point will be the #1 overall pick in the draft.

He already has a bigger arm than a lot of pro QB's.

I'm most worried about the WRs without Shipley. I think he was more important than Colt practically. Gilbert will be good but he needs some WRs to step up. I couldn't even imagine last years team without Shipley.

this is a legit concern but we got a good group of freshman WRs this year i expect someone to step up

Junior Malcolm Williams, senior John Chiles, and senior James Kirkendoll will prob be 1, 2 and 3 on the DC. Kirkendoll shows the most promise out of this group IMO and could be putting on a show for NFL teams looking towards drafting him next year. Chiles has done well and Williams could also have a breakout season.

Don't discount soph Marquise Goodwin though. This dude's a freak athlete, and if the Horns develop in to the pocket passing, timing based team they're leaning towards, he'll be a 2nd deep threat to compliment Williams.

Look out for Desean Hales as well. I've read that him and GG have worked great together over the Spring.

i think goodwin has the most talent of the bunch. i dont think chiles is all that special

The problem isn't with the backs, Newton is perfect for an I-formation scheme. The problem is that the offensive line is as soft as warmed butter.
