The problem isn't with the backs, Newton is perfect for an I-formation scheme. The problem is that the offensive line is as soft as warmed butter.

Newton is too small to be a downhill runner. The limited amount of carries he had last year and the injuries sustained would seem to suggest that this is probably the case. The offensive line last year was designed for a spread offense, not a power running game. Two very different things IMO.

I think the most likely scenario is the fact that Texas no longer has a prolific QB since McCoy left and sold out to the running game if they could nab this kid. If you can't throw the ball proficiently, run it down their throats.

Yeah, I think that is more believable scenario.
I think they were just disappointed in the run game last year and had been running the spread option for Vince and Colt (mobile guys) anyway.

However, the current QB may very well be more prolific that Colt as far as being a pure NFL type passer. he just fits better in a more pro styule offense--which also helps the stud RBs.

Chiles has slimmed down and supposedly is looking good. Kirkendoll is just alright. He won't get drafted he doesn't have a lot of speed and is small. Malcolm Williams just needs to be more consistent. As far as size and athleticism he's a slightly bigger Andre Johnson. Not saying he'll ever be that kind of player, just saying he's a once in a decade athlete for a program.

Goodwin may be the best receiver, but I just heard he went down today with an ankle sprain so could miss some games. He already had a sore ankle and strained hammy.

Freshman Mike Davis is going to play a big role, the best at this stage they've had under Mack Brown. There is no sure thing like Shipley, but I do think a couple of them step up to be reliable, and they certainly have the downfield weapons. They should also have some production from TE with a guy like Barrett Matthews after being decimated at the position by injuries the last few years. Even Greg Smith might be a legit target as a receiver. He was a fast 6'4.5" 230 receiving TE as a recruit, but had knee injuries and was asked to bulk up to play lineman. He's now down to 250 and showing something in the passing game.

At running back it sounds like Cody Johnson may be taking the reigns. He's in better shape and has been killing it the last few weeks. Certainly the right type of guy for downhill running at 250 pounds. He and Newton will make an nice tandem. I hope they forget about Fozzy "run to the sidelines" Whitaker. But he's right there with the other two right now according to the coaches. He always creates a buzz in camp though only to fizzle in the regular season.

I think Cody always had the potential. He was just a bit heavy for the schemes they had been running. But might be perfect for the new sets. Another guy that is supposedly tearing it up at RB is Traylon Shead. Many are surprised, but I'm not. As soon as I read of the kid's intelligence and physical strength and speed of an NFL back already(has been confirmed). He was just underrated since he came from a 1A program. The reports from the first couple of days suggested he'd be lost in the shuffle, but it after that he's been getting lots of praise, and even running with the first and second team.

At receiver, hopefully Chiles is back to where he was when he first arrived at UT. He was a lighter guy who could really, really run and was really elusive. His highlight tape was easily one of the best of any UT recruits ever. He bulked up a lot while at QB though. Hopefully he's back to that leaping, running and weaving dude from his highlights.

I always loved Cody as far as seeing what he could be if he got in shape and really dedicated himself. Some guys never do and get to the last year and coast through. Sounds like for him it caused a sense of urgency now that he only has a couple seasons left. The guy has great top end speed and agility for being a BIG back..just took him awhile to get to top speed, but not now.

I agree about Chiles he was a huge disappointment for a guy who was supposed to be explosive he never looked explosive at all. Not sure why he felt the need to bulk up to 225 pounds + to play qb in the first place. Nothing wrong with a 205 pound dual-threat college qb.
