Alot of people criticize when NFL players get in trouble and it's headline news. ESPN is the evil demon.

Well this player is doing a good thing. It got headline news, there's an article on ESPN, with vid footage too, and somehow the guy still gets criticisms.

They can't win.

uh...good luck finding 100 kids who did that lol

Its a good thing that he is doing though. But I do tend to agree with locked&loaded...If I was giving scholarships away it would be for more than average grades.

GPA differs wildly between schools. Many schools in more affluent neighborhoods commonly give out A's for work that is mediocre since there is great pressure to get kids into college. Aside from problems like Mom being addicted to valium and Dad fooling around with the ladies tennis instructor, these kids have few serious challenges to their education.

Kids who need the $$ are more likely to be those who go to schools where fewer students end up in college. Their teachers are less likely to handout easy As. More importantly, many of these kids likely face real challenges to their education, like having to work to help support the family.

2.5 is a good enough GPA. If the money is going to disadvantaged kids then this sort of GPA will be strong enough to get them admitted to college.

Good for Edwards.

That's based on the incorrect assumption that academic scholarships are the only kind out there. Sounds to me like it's not intended to be an academic scholarship, but an incentive to keep kids off the streets and productively involved in their communities.

There are plenty of scholarships out there to reward students who get top grades. This one has a different goal in mind, apparently. Criticizing it is like criticizing the American Heart Association for not trying to cure Prostate Cancer.

Joseph Wagoner, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards is giving 100 children a $10,000 scholarship for college. Edwards will give the children their scholarships as long as they keep a 2.5 grade point average, have no unexcused absences in high school and they do at least 15 hours of community service each year.

Wish I had had that offer as a kid. I was always getting Cs in wood shop.

I think its a good move and I applaud him for it. I like how he put more emphasis on the effort then the grade. Full attendance and community service are far more important then the difference between a kid who has a 3.25 and one who has a 2.5, IMO.

I think its a good thing to do and I think it says a lot about him. Anyone ripping on him for anything doesn't know what they are talking about. Pretty clear when you got a person dissing on a guy for handing out 1M and at the same time not being able to produce the correct letter grade for that GPA.

And even if the GPA was 2.0, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Schools give far less intelligent kids scholarships each day just to play a sport. Why can't this guy come out and give his money to whomever he thinks deserves it.

Good Move Edwards.

That is a fine point. Edwards at least focused somewhat on academia. There are plenty of kids who deserve a chance to get a further education who work hard and still struggle to gets C's and B's.

Again, this is a million dollars we're talking about here. This is a great move by Edwards, and it'd be nice if there were more stories like this about other players.

Its nothing like criticizing the AHA...just said I would do it differently. I understand that it may not be for grades, but then why put a GPA on it at all?

What about a kid who gets a 2.9 but misses one day of school? Is he less deserving?

Exactly.

This seems aimed at inner city kids who are willing to work for it. These aren't prep school kids with artificially inflated GPAs. If the carrot at the end of the stick entices one student to make something of themselves, he's done more to help the planet than most.

haha. your post is kind of hilarious. If you cant get above a 2.5 your not really trying or your teaching is very poor. Any one can go to school and put in 15 hours of work, but dont you think the scolarships should be used on the kids who have had good grades but just quite werent good enough? Worked there butts off and actually acheived above satisfactory grade points but were just short. Give it to someone who will use it and be thankful, that is all im saying.

Side note a 4.3 is all A+, at my school we use the 7 point scale.

At at many poor schools, kids don't have the opportunity to take AP or Honors courses that give extra GPA points. So a 2.5 -- when you don't have the chance to EVER break 4.0 because you don't get the sort of classes where an A counts a 5 points is better than a 2.5 a more priviledged school that does offer those courses.

That's one day UNEXCUSED. What do you need as an excuse? A note from mom? All that means is your parent(s) knew you weren't in school.

Exactly! I think this is more to keep troubled youths in school. By making them keep a 2.5 he's basically guaranteeing that they will get into some college.

The unexcused absences thing sounds like it is AFTER they receive the scholarship. They have to keep a clean attendance record in order toget the money.

The guy is poneying up $1million and people on here are complaining about the way he does it...

What's kind of hilarious is a post with 19 grammatical mistakes criticizing a 2.5 GPA.

How soon before someone says, "he makes so much money, he should have given 200 kids money!"

Yeah. I was a "B" student in school at best. Granted I didn't try to my fullest abilities and would not have qualified for the scholarship, but I had a lot of friends that were in tougher situations whether it was a learning disability, having to work 30 hours a week to help support their family, etc. And talk about artificial GPA's, one girl in my school got caught red handed cheating on a physics test in high school and still made the National Honor Society. Schools and teachers are notorious for playing favorites.

It isn't just playing favorites anymore -- at some schools giving a B is like failing the kid - big surprise, schools with affluent kids...

I am now a huge Braylon Edwards fan.
How many pro athletes could do this and don't?
Too many of them indulging themselves with gaudy homes, cars, and jewelry when they could be investing in their communities for a better future.
Edwards is what, 22-24 years old, and he already "gets it". Good for him.
