Bruce Carter: Linebacker rotation is 'weird'

RVING, Texas -- The Cowboys have an interesting linebacker rotation going.

Bruce Carter is paired up with Sean Lee, and Ernie Sims is teamed with Justin Durant.

The biggest name here isn't so much Lee, because he's on the field in the base and nickle packages. But Carter's playing time seems to be split between himself and Sims.

Donald Miralle/Getty ImagesDallas linebacker Bruce Carter, right, is trying to make the most of his opportunities to play, but has struggled in coverage at times.
"It is a little weird," Carter said after Friday's practice. "But at the same time when (the coaches) say go in, you got to go in and play, and when you're out you're out, and you have to cheer the defense on."

Carter has struggled in pass coverage this season and was exposed badly in a loss to the San Diego Chargers, when he was benched in the second half for Sims. The next week, the Cowboys opened in a nickle package with Sims and Lee getting the first snaps of the game. Carter later came in and finished with 39 snaps. But Carter was able to get the bulk of the defensive snaps the next two weeks as the starting weakside linebacker, totaling 145 snaps compared to Sims' 36. Though Carter was getting the bulk of the snaps, Durant's groin injury allowed Sims to get more playing time as the strongside linebacker.

But last week in Detroit, Carter saw some reduced playing time, 45 snaps compared to the 35 by Sims.

"When I get in, I'm in and I just try and play the best that I can," Sims said. "I don't really want to look at snap counts and whose playing, and that's when you get your head all messed up. I just try to focus on what I can control."

I really wanted to see so much more from Carter this year. Hes one of the most physically gifted guys on the team... Probably one of the fastest too.

Hes laid an egg this year, especially compared to Lee.

lol I call them GIFs which is what they are... from what I understand.

I still hope Bruce will get things going. He has the tools to be a fantastic LB

They are ruining this kid

I don't know.

How would you say they are ruining him?

The sky is the limit for this guy, but he has seemed to recognize some plays a second too slow.

Is that someone "ruining" him? Or is that him holding himself back?

I have extremely high hopes for him in a Cowboys uniform. I hope he fulfills them.

I agree with you about him. I've actually expected much more from him...whether justified or not.

Well for some of the games hes played youd be right to expect big things. Last year I became really interested and started finding what I could about him. He has amazing speed. I read that he had timed a 4.37 at UNC, now that wasnt anything confirmed from what I read but still, after watching him you can see that he is very fast especially for his size.

Guy is at his best chasing things sidleline to sideline. Liability in coverage, particularly in seam situations.

Agreed. He may never get it all together but I think those are skills that will develope.

THAT is on coaching, nothing else. You teach aggressive lb's to play coverage...DO NOT give up on 4.3 speed with albeit unpredictable flashes so far...do NOT take this player out all together. Teach him NOW...please do not give us skit about him not being ready...that is kind of your job? Stop relying on veterans to be average to save your jobs, do your jobs beforehand and make sure this specimen UNDERSTANDS (live with him for all I care)...

Based on the history of ridiculously exaggerated numbers out of UNC, I wouldn't buy that 4.37 time at all.

Every year we hear how some UNC prospect is going to put up ridiculous numbers at the combine and they always disappoint.

Even if Carter ran a 4.5, that's still plenty fast for a LB.

From what I remember he did run a legit 4.5 coming off his injury
I dont really buy that the number is a complete lie... I just imagine its probably hand timed or something. Whatever, after watching him its obvious he has elite speed for a LB.

Yeah, maybe by the same guy that timed Quinn and Coples at 4.4.

Come on...Carter has displayed that speed and some on plays probably not considered specifically important. This guy definitely has superior LB speed. Fastest player in front 7 is safe. If you haven't seen that "burst" that needs 4.4 assistance then you don't watch all the games...

I'm not saying Carter isn't fast. I'm saying reported times from schools are bogus.

I firmly believe that this guy is going to make a game-saving/breaking play (or maybe two) for us before this season is all said and done.

Maybe even during the playoffs...
